Chapter 5 - The First Counter-StrikeBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the financial world was in an uproar.

Headline news on every local paper and business blog displayed the same image: Lorenzo Vescari and Isabella Cruz stepping out of the Witmore Grand Ballroom, her black gown gleaming, his hand firmly at her waist.

Isabella sat at the long marble dining table in the estate's sunroom, drinking black coffee while reviewing the financial documents Lorenzo’s lawyers had provided. Her background in accounting and corporate law—the very skills she had used to silently build Daniel’s firm—was now her greatest weapon.

"He hid three million dollars in shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands," Isabella murmured, tracing a column of figures with a red pen. "He used my father’s old police union pension fund as collateral for a high-risk mezzanine loan."

Lorenzo sat at the head of the table, reading a stack of intelligence reports while taking slow sips of espresso.

"He was sloppy," Lorenzo remarked smoothly. "He assumed you would never look at the books once he pushed you out."

"He assumed I was stupid," Isabella corrected sharply. "He thought because I loved him, I was blind."

Before Lorenzo could answer, his chief of security, Marco, stepped into the room, his expression grave. He handed Lorenzo a encrypted tablet.

"Boss," Marco said quietly. "Arthur Whitfield just called an emergency meeting of the City Commerce Committee. He’s trying to invoke an anti-racketeering clause to freeze our acquisition of the Vance properties."

Lorenzo didn't look surprised. "Predictable."

"That's not all," Marco added, glancing nervously at Isabella. "There's a rumor circulating that Daniel Vance was seen meeting with your cousin, Julian."

Lorenzo’s posture instantly changed. The cool, detached demeanor vanished, replaced by an aura of pure, predatory stillness.

Isabella felt a chill run down her spine. "Who is Julian?"

"Julian Vescari," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a register that sent shivers through the room. "My cousin. And the man who believes he should be running this family. If Daniel is talking to Julian, he isn't just trying to save his business. He’s trying to start a war within my house."

Lorenzo stood up, buttoning his jacket. "Marco, bring the car round."

"Where are we going?" Isabella asked, standing up as well.

Lorenzo looked at her, his gray eyes burning with a dark, intense flame. "We are going to pay a visit to my cousin. And you are coming with me, Isabella. It's time you learn how the Vescari family handles traitors."
