Chapter 10 - Shadows in the Garden

By Wednesday evening, the estate felt quieter. The heavy iron gates at the perimeter of the property were locked tighter than a fortress, guarded by double shifts of Damian's most trusted men.

I found Damian standing on the stone terrace outside his study, staring out at the rolling hills bathed in moonlight. He had his left arm out of the sling, though he still favored it slightly.

"You should be inside resting," I said softly, stepping out into the cool night air and wrapping a woolen shawl tightly around my shoulders.

Damian turned, his dark eyes softening as I approached. He reached out, pulling me gently against his side. "I’ve spent too many years hiding in the dark, Emily. Being out here reminds me of what's at stake."

"Do you think they'll try anything?" I asked, looking toward the dark perimeter where the forest met the property line. "Elena is locked away, and Sterling is dead. Who else could be left?"

"Syndicates don't die just because the figureheads fall," Damian answered grimly. "Harrison is still missing. We found his private airstrip abandoned outside the city limits, but he hasn't crossed the border yet. He’s looking for a way out—or a way to reclaim his most valuable assets."

He looked down at me, his hand cupping my cheek with a tenderness that completely contrasted his lethal reputation.

"Which means you and the children are still his primary target."
