Chapter 17 - Shadows Fade

The reception was a celebration of life, light, and unbreakable bonds. Long tables adorned with candles and silverware stretched across the lawn, filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and the joyful patter of little feet.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and fiery amber, I slipped away for a brief moment to catch my breath by the quiet fountain at the edge of the garden.

The cool water splashed rhythmically against the stone basin, a soothing counterpoint to the vibrant music playing in the distance.

"Thinking about the diner?" a deep, familiar voice asked gently.

I turned to find Damian walking up behind me, holding two glasses of champagne. He handed one to me and wrapped his free arm securely around my waist, pulling me back against his chest.

I leaned back into him, watching the shimmering water. "Sometimes. It feels like another lifetime ago. When I was just scrubbing grease and wondering if tomorrow would bring anything other than bills and heartbreak."

Damian pressed a gentle kiss to my temple. "You survived it all, Emily. Every hardship, every lie, every monster. You fought your way back to them—and back to me."

"We fought together," I corrected him softly, turning around in his arms to look up into his dark eyes.

Damian smiled, a warm, genuine expression that belonged only to me. "Always."
