Chapter 13 - Dawn of a New Era

By sunrise, federal agents and local authorities had swarmed the estate, clearing away the wreckage of Harrison's final, desperate attempt to reclaim his empire. The network was now entirely eradicated down to its very roots.
The news stations broadcasted the final nail in the coffin: Dr. Harrison apprehended and neutralized following a domestic breach at the Marchetti estate; the infant trafficking ring completely dismantled.
Inside the nursery, the chaos of the night before felt like a distant nightmare. The triplets were wide awake, playing blocks on the rug, completely oblivious to the war that had been fought to keep them safe.
I sat in the rocking chair, a cup of warm coffee cooling untouched on the side table, watching Damian interact with the children. He was sitting cross-legged on the floor, letting Luca pull playfully at his dark hair while Mia giggled and dropped plastic rings into his lap.
The terrifying underground kingpin had completely transformed into a devoted father right before my eyes.

I stood up, walked over to them, and knelt right beside him on the rug. Instantly, all three toddlers crawled over, throwing their arms around my neck and burying their faces in my shoulders, babbling happily.
Damian reached out, his hand resting warmly on the small of my back, drawing me closer until there was no space left between our little family.

"It's over, Emily," Damian murmured softly, his gaze locking onto mine with an unshakeable promise. "No more running. No more ghosts. Just us."
I leaned my forehead against his, a deep, abiding peace finally washing over my soul. "Just us."
