Chapter 18 - The Next Chapter

Two years later, the estate was louder, busier, and infinitely more alive.

Leo, Mia, and Luca were now boisterous three-year-olds running across the sprawling lawns, chasing soccer balls and laughing uncontrollably while two new golden retriever puppies barked at their heels.

Inside the sunlit kitchen of the main house, I was frosting a homemade birthday cake while flour dusted my cheek.

Footsteps echoed behind me, followed by small, hurried patter.

"Mama! Mama, look!" little Mia shouted, running into the kitchen holding a clumsy drawing of five stick figures holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

I knelt down, sweeping her up into a warm hug and pressing a kiss to her cheek. "Oh, sweetheart, this is beautiful! Who are these people?"

"That's me, Leo, Luca, you, and Papa!" Mia declared proudly, pointing to the figures with a sticky finger.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, lifting me slightly as a familiar chin rested gently on my shoulder. Damian smiled down at the drawing, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

"Looks like the artist captured our best angles," Damian teased, kissing my cheek right beside the spot of flour.

I leaned back against him, looking out the large bay windows at our children playing in the golden sunlight, feeling a profound sense of completeness wash over my soul.

The nightmare at St. Jude’s was nothing more than a faded memory, a dark chapter in a book that had ultimately led me to everything I was ever meant to be.

"They're growing up too fast," I whispered, resting my hands over Damian's where they were clasped around my waist.

"Then we'll cherish every single second of it," Damian replied softly, turning me around in his arms so he could look deep into my eyes. "Every sunrise, every laugh, every moment."
