Chapter 4 - THE VIP ROOM INTRUDERThe morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting long golden shafts across the luxury hospital suite. Claire had fallen back into a deep, medicated sleep, her breathing finally calm and even.

Blake stood by the window, staring out at the East River while sipping a cup of black coffee that had long since gone cold. His phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a report from his security detail.
Instead, it was a direct text message from an unknown encrypted number:
A lion doesn't lose sleep over sheep, Blake. But sometimes, stray sheep wander back into the slaughterhouse. Let her go, or the girl pays the price.
Blake’s entire body went rigid.
Before he could process the threat, a soft knock echoed at the private suite door.
Blake spun around, his hand sliding instinctively toward his jacket pocket where he kept a heavy brass pocketknife. "Who is it?" he called out, his voice razor-sharp.
The door swung open smoothly, revealing a tall, impeccably tailored figure in a charcoal bespoke suit. Silver-haired, immaculate, with a cold, serpentine smile playing across his lips.
Marcus Vance. Chief of Staff of Hamilton Global Enterprises. The man who had managed Blake's empire from the shadows for fifteen years.
"Good morning, boss," Marcus said smoothly, stepping into the room and closing the door softly behind him. He glanced toward the hospital bed where Claire was sleeping, his eyes narrowing with polite disdain. "I must say, you certainly know how to shake up the stock market. Half the board is in a panic because you missed the morning acquisition briefing to play nursemaid in a charity ward."
Blake didn't move an inch. He remained standing by the window, his gaze locked onto Marcus like a predator tracking prey.
"How did you get past my private security detail downstairs, Marcus?" Blake asked quietly, his voice dangerously low.
"Oh, please, Blake," Marcus chuckled, adjusting his gold-rimmed cufflinks. "I built that security detail. Every man downstairs answers to payroll routing that I control. Did you really think a few private guards could keep me out of a hospital I personally helped fund?"
"You sent that text message," Blake stated flatly.
Marcus didn't blink. He didn't even try to deny it. He walked slowly toward the center of the room, admiring the expensive medical equipment with feigned indifference.
"I sent a reminder," Marcus corrected smoothly. "Seven years ago, when Mrs. Hamilton decided to walk out on your billion-dollar empire, she posed a catastrophic risk to our upcoming hostile takeovers. If the tabloids ever got wind that the ruthless billionaire Blake Hamilton couldn't even keep his own wife happy, our stock would have tanked twenty points. So, I took care of it. I gave her a choice: disappear completely, change her name, live in the shadows with zero financial assistance—or watch every single member of her extended family lose their jobs, homes, and livelihoods overnight."
Blake’s vision turned completely red.
The air rushed out of his lungs in a violent gasp. "You... you threatened her?"
"I protected your interests, Blake," Marcus said, his voice dropping all pretense of warmth, turning icy and clinical. "And you repaid my loyalty by spending your morning dragging her back into the light. And worse—bringing that brat into your penthouse."
"That brat is my daughter," Blake growled, taking a sudden, explosive step forward.
Marcus didn't flinch. Instead, he pulled a sleek black smartphone from his breast pocket and tapped the screen, holding it up for Blake to see.
May you like
On the screen was a live video feed of the adjoining luxury suite where six-year-old Isla was still sleeping peacefully under the watchful eye of the private nurse. Standing quietly by the door of Isla's room was a heavy-set man in a black tactical vest, holding a suppressed firearm pointed lazily toward the floor.
"One word, Blake," Marcus whispered, his smile turning venomous. "One wrong move, one police officer called, one phone call to the authorities—and that little girl stops breathing before you can cross this room."
