Chapter 5 - THE DEVIL'S BARGAINThe silence in the hospital suite grew so thick it felt like physical weight pressing down on Blake’s shoulders.

He stared at the smartphone screen, watching Isla shift restlessly in her sleep, completely unaware that a gun was pointed just feet away from her bed. His heart hammered against his ribs like a caged animal. Every drop of power, every billion-dollar asset, every corporate skyscraper he owned suddenly felt completely useless against the cold, calculated cruelty standing right in front of him.
"What do you want, Marcus?" Blake asked, his voice dead, devoid of all emotion, stripped down to raw survival.
Marcus slipped his phone back into his pocket with a satisfied smile, smoothing the lapels of his suit jacket. "Oh, it's quite simple, Blake. You are going to sign over controlling voting shares of Hamilton Global Enterprises to the executive oversight board—a board chaired, naturally, by myself."
Blake’s eyes narrowed. "A corporate coup. You want the entire empire."
"I want security," Marcus corrected smoothly. "You've grown soft, Blake. Ever since she walked out, you've been distracted by ghosts. You've blocked three major acquisitions this year because of 'ethical concerns.' Ethics don't build empires; power does. You sign the transfer documents by noon today, and I walk away. The girl lives. Claire stays hidden in a private European sanatorium where she can live out her days in comfort, and you go back to being the untouchable titan of Wall Street."
"And if I refuse?" Blake whispered, his fingers curling into tight fists at his sides, his knuckles turning stark white.
"Then the little girl has a tragic, sudden heart failure," Marcus said casually, checking his watch. "Children with weak constitutions are so fragile, aren't they? A sudden spike in adrenaline, a blocked oxygen line... it happens all the time in hospitals."
Before Blake could launch himself across the room to snap Marcus's neck with his bare hands, a soft, raspy rustle came from the hospital bed behind them.
"Don't... don't do it, Blake..."
Both men turned sharply.
Claire had pushed herself up on one elbow. Her green eyes, burning with a fierce, terrifying intensity, locked onto Marcus Vance with pure, unadulterated venom. She was pale as a corpse, her hospital gown hanging loosely from her frail shoulders, but the weakness in her voice was completely gone.
"Claire, darling, you should be resting," Marcus cooed mockingly, taking a step toward the bed. "Your husband was just making a very important career decision."
"He's not signing anything, you sadistic monster," Claire spat out, her voice cutting through the sterile room like shattered glass. She looked directly at Blake, ignoring Marcus entirely. "Blake, listen to me. Don't give him the company. Don't give him your soul. He doesn't hold all the cards."
Marcus laughed, a cold, dry sound. "And what cards do you think you have, Claire? You're dying in a charity ward!"
"I'm not dying," Claire said, a chilling, triumphant smile touching the corners of her pale lips. "And I haven't spent the last seven years hiding under a rock, Marcus. While you were busy plotting a corporate takeover from the shadows, I was building an insurance policy."
Marcus’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"
"Seven years ago, when you threatened my family and forced me into exile, I knew you'd eventually come back to finish the job if Blake ever got too close," Claire said, her voice steady and clear. "So, I didn't just hide. I kept every single threatening email, every offshore bank transfer routing slip you used to bribe local officials, and every encrypted audio recording of your threats."
Marcus’s face drained of color. The slick, untouchable corporate fixer suddenly looked like a cornered rat.

"You're lying," Marcus hissed, taking a sudden step toward the bed with his hand diving into his jacket pocket. "You don't have anything!"
"Try checking your secure corporate server right now, Marcus," Claire challenged softly. "Or better yet... ask the federal task force currently surrounding this hospital why their federal subpoena was just executed on your primary Swiss bank accounts ten minutes ago."
