Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW RETURNSSix months later, the autumn leaves of Central Park had turned brilliant shades of amber and gold, painting the city in vibrant warmth.

Claire had made a full recovery, her heart strong and steady, her days filled with laughter, art, and long walks with Isla through the park. Blake had officially stepped down from Hamilton Global Enterprises, delegating leadership to a trusted board of directors while dedicating his time and massive fortune to rebuilding affordable housing across the Lower East Side.
It was a crisp Saturday afternoon. Blake, Claire, and Isla were strolling near the Bethesda Fountain, eating roasted chestnuts and enjoying the rare peace of a Manhattan weekend.
"Daddy, look! A puppy!" Isla squealed, breaking away from their grip and darting toward a golden retriever being walked by an elderly couple a few yards away.
"Isla, don't run too far!" Claire called out, smiling as she watched her daughter chase after the dog.
Blake stepped closer to Claire, slipping his hand into hers. "She’s getting so big, Claire. Sometimes I still can't believe this is real. That you're here. That we're a family."
"It's real, Blake," Claire whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder. "We finally made it."
As she spoke, Blake’s eyes drifted casually across the paved pathway toward the stone archway of the terrace.
And suddenly, every muscle in his body froze.
Standing in the shadow of the stone arch, half-hidden behind a thick concrete pillar, was a tall, familiar figure in a dark trench coat.
It was Marcus Vance.
Blake’s breath caught in his throat.
How? His mind screamed. Federal prison. Maximum security.
Marcus’s trial wasn't scheduled to begin for another three months. He was supposed to be locked away in a federal penitentiary under 24-hour surveillance. Yet here he was, standing less than thirty feet away, his silver hair slightly disheveled, his eyes fixed on them with a cold, terrifying, psychotic glare.
May you like
Slowly, deliberately, Marcus reached inside his heavy trench coat.
A glint of metallic steel caught the afternoon sunlight.
