Three blocks away, high above the glittering skyline of the city, Elena Vance stood on the balcony of her penthouse, looking out over the rain-slicked grid of Chicago.

She held a crystal glass of sparkling water, her dark eyes reflecting the distant amber glow of the city lights.

Her phone chimed on the glass table beside her. It was a private security report from the Michigan Avenue lobby.

Subject Mark Sterling observed working night shift at Apex Financial. Incident free. No attempt made to approach Principal.

Elena stared at the screen for a long, quiet moment.

She remembered the man who had carried her across the threshold of a small house on Hawthorne Lane, back before corporate metrics and bonus structures corrupted his soul. She remembered the warmth in his eyes before ambition turned him into a stranger.
