Chapter 25 - The Stranger in the GalleryThree months later, the Architecture of Silence exhibition opened to international acclaim in Spain, and a scaled-down version traveled back to the Art Institute of Chicago for a special summer showcase.

The gallery was packed with critics, foreign journalists, and local patrons.

Mark stood near the back of the exhibition hall, wearing a simple dark blazer, watching a young couple study his charcoal drawing of the empty kitchen table.

"It’s haunting, isn't it?" a low, cultured voice murmured beside him.

Mark turned.

Standing a few feet away was an elegant, silver-haired man in a bespoke Italian suit—Arthur Vance’s former primary rival in the European logistics syndicate, a man who had once tried to buy out Vance & Co. during its darkest hour.

Mark stiffened instinctively. "Mr. Hauer. I didn't expect to see you here."

The older man smiled faintly, holding a glass of mineral water. "Excellence draws strange company, Mr. Sterling. I saw your work in Bilbao. I wanted to see the man who survived the collapse of Arthur’s regime with his soul intact."

Mark looked down at his hands, then back at the charcoal drawing on the wall. "I didn't survive it with my soul intact, Mr. Hauer. I had to let the old one die so a new one could grow."

Hauer nodded slowly, his eyes reflecting the gallery lights. "A costly lesson."

"The best ones always are," Mark replied.
