Chapter 28 - The New ClassBack on the north side of the city, the morning sun poured through the large, dust-moted windows of Mark’s art studio.

It was a Saturday morning, and the room was filled with the cheerful chatter of half a dozen teenagers and young adults sketching furiously on easels, mixing colors, and laughing over spilled water cups.

Maya, his most promising student, held up a canvas depicting a bustling Chicago street seen from the window of an elevated train.

"Mr. Sterling," she called out, wiping a smudge of yellow paint from her forehead. "Look! I finally got the negative space right. I didn't crowd the buildings. I left room for the sky."

Mark walked over, resting his hands on the back of her stool as he inspected the work.

The composition was balanced, vibrant, and full of honest, breathing life.

"It’s brilliant, Maya," Mark said, smiling warmly. "You didn't just paint a city. You painted a place where people can actually live."

He straightened up, walking over to his own worktable where a fresh sheet of heavy, textured paper waited beneath the morning light.

He picked up a charcoal pencil, felt the familiar grain of the wood between his fingers, and smiled.
