Chapter 24 - The Fall of Another EmpireWhile Mark found redemption in charcoal and canvas, the corporate world of Chicago continued its ruthless, unyielding rotation.

Arthur Vance, awaiting trial under federal house arrest, had spent his remaining fortune trying to dismantle Vance & Co. from the outside through a network of disgruntled former board members and anonymous proxy battles.

It was a fatal miscalculation.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Elena Vance sat at the head of the boardroom table on the 40th floor—the very table where Mark had once boasted about pruning dead weight.

The room was packed with international investors, institutional stakeholders, and federal regulators.

"The proxy challenge led by Arthur Vance’s associates has been legally neutralized," the chief compliance officer announced, sliding a final legal brief across the mahogany wood. "Their remaining voting shares have been absorbed by the Vance Trust. The restructuring is complete."

A murmur of cautious respect rippled through the room.

Elena looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the gray Chicago river below. The rain was drumming against the glass—the same relentless, rhythmic sound that had fallen on Hawthorne Lane years ago.

"Good," Elena said, her voice steady and clear. "Ensure that the remaining assets from Arthur’s liquidation are immediately redirected into the municipal youth art initiative."

She had built an impenetrable fortress, but as she looked out at the vast skyline, she understood a fundamental truth: an empire was only as strong as the peace it allowed its people to find.
