Chapter 1 - The Stranger’s SecretThe rain drummed against the pavement of Elm Street as Claire followed Daniel Han through the gray Chicago downpour. Every step away from the wrought-iron gates of the Bennett mansion felt like a physical weight lifting off her chest, yet a chilling void remained in its place. She was twenty-two years old, penniless, phoneless, and homeless—sold off by the woman who had promised her father to protect her.

“You’re walking too fast,” Claire called out, her voice trembling as the water soaked through her thin sweater.

Daniel stopped and turned. Under the dim, flickering streetlamp, his sharp, angular features looked less like those of a broken vagrant and more like a predator caught in repose. Despite his torn army jacket and worn boots, he stood with a rigid, military posture that didn't match his ragged appearance.

“We need to keep moving,” Daniel said, his deep voice cutting through the wind. “People are already looking.”

Claire froze, wiping rain from her eyes. “Looking? Who would look for me? Margaret and Madison couldn’t wait to throw me out.”

“Not them,” Daniel muttered, his dark eyes scanning the dark, rain-slicked intersection behind them. “A black sedan has been tailing us since we left the estate. Your stepmother isn't the only one interested in your father’s final legacy, Claire.”

A shiver colder than the rainwater ran down her spine. “What are you talking about? My father was a contractor. The company is bankrupt.”

“That’s what Margaret wants the world to believe,” Daniel replied, holding out his arm. “Grab my sleeve. My apartment is two blocks away. Once we’re inside, I’ll tell you why your hundred dollars bought you much more than a way out.”

Claire hesitated for only a second. With nowhere else to turn, she gripped the wet fabric of his jacket and followed him into the shadows of the alleyway, unaware that the game of deception had only just begun.
