The Bennett mansion—now legally restored to its rightful owner—was quiet, but no longer haunted. The heavy iron gates stood open, welcoming back a new staff of honest, hardworking people who respected the home’s history.
Claire stood on the front balcony, sipping a cup of hot coffee while looking out over the manicured lawn. Her mother’s silver bracelet gleamed on her wrist, and her father’s photograph rested safely on the mantelpiece inside.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her.
She turned to see Daniel walking out onto the balcony. He wore a simple dark sweater and jeans, his tactical gear long gone, though the quiet, unyielding strength in his dark eyes remained unchanged.
“The federal prosecutors finished their final review this morning,” Daniel said softly, leaning against the stone railing beside her. “Margaret and Vance are facing federal indictments for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and second-degree poisoning. They won’t be seeing freedom for a very long time.”
Claire smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years. She looked up at him. “And what about you, Daniel? Now that the mission is officially over... where will you go?”
Daniel turned his gaze from the skyline down to meet hers. A rare, gentle smile softened the sharp lines of his face.
“Your father’s contract specified that I protect his family for as long as it takes,” Daniel said quietly, reaching out to gently brush a lock of hair from her cheek. “And as far as I can tell... my job here has only just begun.”
