Chapter 4 - The Escape Through the ShadowsWith a deafening crash, the hallway door shuddered as a heavy steel battering ram slammed against the locks. Splinters of wood exploded inward, but the heavy iron deadbolts held—for now.

“They’re breaking through!” Claire cried out, grabbing the leather ledger and clutching it to her chest like a shield.

“Move!” Daniel barked, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the back of the studio.

He shoved aside a heavy wooden wardrobe, revealing a narrow, rusted maintenance shaft that led straight down into the building’s subterranean old coal chute. Sparks flew as another blow from the battering ram shattered the door frame, sending the upper lock flying across the room.

“Go! Down the ladder, don't look back!” Daniel ordered, shoving her into the shaft just as the main door violently caved inward, collapsing in a heap of splintered wood and dust.

Heavy boots stomped onto the floorboards. “Secure the perimeter! Check the windows! Find the girl!” Vance shouted over the chaos.

Claire scrambled down the vertical iron ladder into the pitch-black darkness of the basement, the sound of gunfire suddenly cracking overhead.

Pop! Pop!

A suppressed weapon answered back with sharp, rhythmic precision from above. Daniel was holding them off.

Weeping in terror, Claire hit the concrete floor of the basement, her boots splashing in standing rainwater. She stumbled forward through the maze of old brick storage rooms, guided only by the faint red glow of an emergency exit sign fifty feet ahead.

She pushed through the heavy metal push-bar door and burst out into the torrential Chicago rain, gasping for air in the alleyway behind the building.

Parked directly across the narrow alley, its engine idling and headlights off, was a matte-black luxury SUV. The rear door clicked open automatically, and a gloved hand reached out into the rain, grabbing her wrist.

“Get in, Miss Bennett,” a calm, professional female voice commanded. “We don't have much time.”
