Chapter 8 - The Fallen Mask“...and so, I dedicate this award to the future of our city, and to the enduring legacy of Henry Bennett,” Margaret concluded, flashing a brilliant, triumphant smile to the crowd.

“Don't dedicate it just yet, Margaret,” a clear, ringing voice cut through the applause.

The entire ballroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence. Heads turned in unison toward the center aisle.

Margaret blinked, shielding her eyes from the stage lights as she peered down into the crowd. Her smile faltered, replaced by a mask of absolute, paralyzing horror.

Walking up the grand marble steps toward the stage was Claire Bennett—flanked not by the broken, penniless outcast she had sold for a hundred dollars that morning, but by a sharply dressed, dangerous-looking man and a senior corporate executive carrying a heavy leather binder.

“C-Claire?” Margaret stammered into the live microphone, her voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. “What is the meaning of this? Security! Remove these intruders at once!”

Two burly private security guards rushed forward, reaching for Daniel’s shoulders.

Daniel didn't even blink. With blinding, effortless speed, he ducked under the first guard’s grasp, swept his leg, and sent him crashing onto the polished marble floor, while simultaneously pinning the second guard’s arm behind his back in a agonizing lock. The entire confrontation lasted less than three seconds.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Flashbulbs from press cameras began to pop furiously.

Richard Vance leaped up from a front-row VIP table, his face draining completely of color. “Stop them! Arrest them! They’re trespassers!”

“We aren't trespassers, Richard,” Elena Rostova said loudly, stepping onto the stage and opening the heavy leather ledger for all to see. “We are the legal executors of Henry Bennett’s true, unadulterated last will and testament, along with the complete forensic audit of Bennett Restoration.”

Margaret gripped the edges of the podium so hard her knuckles turned white. “That’s a forgery! Lies! My husband left everything to me and my daughter!”

“Your husband left you nothing, Margaret,” Claire said, stepping right up to the edge of the stage, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “Because you didn't just forge his will—you poisoned him. And this morning, you thought you could buy my silence and sell my life for exactly one hundred dollars.”
