At the center podium stood Margaret Bennett, radiant in a custom emerald-green silk dress, holding a heavy crystal trophy. Beside her, Madison beamed for the cameras, wearing a diamond necklace that had once belonged to Claire’s mother.
“Thank you so much,” Margaret said into the microphone, dabbing a fake tear from the corner of her eye with a lace handkerchief. “As many of you know, our family suffered a profound tragedy with the passing of my beloved husband, Henry. But through faith, resilience, and hard work, Bennett Restoration has not only survived—it is entering a golden era of unprecedented prosperity.”
Polite, thunderous applause echoed across the ballroom.
From the back service entrance of the grand hall, two figures slipped past the security guards, blending seamlessly into the waitstaff holding trays of hors d'oeuvres.
Claire wore a tailored black velvet coat over her simple shirt and jeans, her hair falling in damp waves around her face. Beside her walked Daniel—no longer wearing his ragged army jacket, but a sharply fitted black tuxedo that transformed him from a street vagrant into an imposing, elite operative. A thin white scar was visible along his jawline, adding a chilling aura of lethal authority.
“Are you ready?” Daniel whispered, his hand gently resting on the small of her back.
Claire looked up at him, feeling a surge of raw, unadulterated strength she never knew she possessed. The frightened girl who had scrubbed floors in her stepmother’s mansion was gone. In her place stood the true heir of Henry Bennett.
