Chapter 6 - The Poisoned PenClara’s hands shook so violently she could barely undo the brass clasp of the worn leather folder.

She stood frozen in the center of the luxurious west suite, the golden sunlight pouring through the arched window, casting a warm glow over a moment filled with icy dread. Evie had retreated quietly to the corner of the king-sized bed, watching her mother with wide, frightened eyes. Malcolm stood motionless near the doorway, giving them space, his hands still tucked deep into his pockets.

With a sharp click, the folder popped open.

A cascade of yellowed paper spilled out across the velvet sofa—bank statements, corporate wire transfers, legal depositions, and signed memos bearing letterheads Clara hadn't seen in five years.

"Read the top memo, Clara," Malcolm instructed, his voice low and steady. "Dated three months before your father’s company collapsed."

Clara’s trembling fingers picked up the topmost sheet. Her eyes scanned the dense text, reading the corporate jargon line by line until her pupils dilated in sheer horror.

It was an internal memo from Reed Global’s Chief Financial Officer at the time—a man named Julian Vance.

To: Executive Committee. Subject: Murphy Industrial Logistics - Asset Liquidation Strategy. Note: Executive VP Julian Vance has authorized the intentional freezing of Murphy’s primary shipping lines and the rerouting of their credit lines to force a premature bankruptcy. Action to be executed independently of CEO Malcolm Reed's knowledge, ensuring maximum asset recovery for secondary holding accounts.

Clara stopped breathing. The paper fluttered from her fingers, drifting slowly down to land on the Persian rug.

"No," she whispered, shaking her head violently as tears spilled hot and fast down her cheeks. "No, this... this is a fake! You're a billionaire! You owned the company! You signed the final papers!"

"I signed them because my legal team told me Murphy Logistics was bleeding dry from mismanagement," Malcolm said, stepping forward, his voice heavy with a deep, grinding remorse that had haunted him for half a decade. "I trusted Julian Vance. He was my right hand. He handled the acquisitions while I expanded our international portfolio. By the time I realized the books had been systematically falsified to force a hostile default, your father was already dead."

Clara stumbled backward until the edge of the king-sized bed caught the back of her knees, forcing her to sit down. Her world—the fragile, bitter narrative she had built her entire survival upon for the last five years—was shattering into dust around her.

"You didn't know?" she choked out, looking up at him through a blur of tears. "You didn't know he was innocent?"

"The day your father collapsed in the courtroom, he tried to hand me a manila envelope," Malcolm said, his voice cracking slightly as the memory hit him with full force. "Security tackled him before he could reach me. They threw him out. I thought he was just a desperate, bitter man trying to save a failing business. I didn't look inside that envelope until six months later, after the dust had settled."

Malcolm pointed down at the folder.

"That envelope contained proof that Julian Vance had been embezzling millions from our expansion fund, routing the stolen capital through shell companies, and framing your father’s logistics firm to cover his tracks."

Clara covered her face with both hands, her shoulders shaking violently as long, ragged sobs ripped from her chest. All the anger, all the hatred, all the freezing nights in the abandoned station wagon—it had all been built on a lie orchestrated by a snake sitting in Malcolm’s own corporate tower.

Malcolm walked over, kneeling down slowly until he was eye-level with her.

"I couldn't undo your father's death," Malcolm whispered, his eyes fierce and unblinking. "And I couldn't find you. You vanished off the grid the day after the funeral. I spent three years looking for you, Clara."

Clara lowered her hands, her red, swollen eyes locking onto his. "Why?"

"Because," Malcolm said softly, reaching out to gently touch the edge of her ruined sleeve, "you deserve your father’s empire back. Every single cent. And I am going to help you take it all away from Julian Vance."
