Chapter 8 - The Velvet TrapThe executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Reed Global Tower was a masterclass in modern intimidation.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the gleaming city skyline below. A massive, custom-built mahogany conference table stretched down the center of the room, surrounded by twelve leather executive chairs.

At precisely 9:00 AM, the heavy glass double doors swung open.

Julian Vance sat at the head of the table, his fingers steepled together, wearing an expensive bespoke charcoal suit and an expression of supreme, unshakeable confidence. Around him sat the board of directors—twelve powerful, wealthy individuals who nodded obediently at his every word.

"Well, gentlemen," Julian said, his smooth, practiced voice cutting through the hum of conversation. "It appears our CEO, Mr. Reed, has once again decided to abandon his responsibilities. Given his absence, I propose we move forward with the international shipping acquisition vote immediately."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the board. One elderly director raised his pen to sign the digital voting slate.

"I wouldn't sign that just yet, Julian," a voice rang out from the doorway.

The entire room froze.

All heads snapped toward the entrance. The glass doors pushed open wide, revealing Malcolm Reed stepping into the room. But it wasn't Malcolm that made the blood drain from Julian Vance’s face.

It was the woman walking beside him.

Clara Murphy wore a razor-sharp, tailored navy-blue designer pantsuit, her dark curls cascading in a sophisticated wave over her shoulders, her posture radiating absolute, terrifying authority. She didn't look like a victim of corporate greed; she looked like an executioner.

Julian stood up so fast his leather chair screeched loudly against the polished floor.

"Malcolm? What is the meaning of this?" Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward Clara. "And... who in God’s name allowed her into this building? Security!"

"Save your breath, Julian," Malcolm said smoothly, walking calmly toward the head of the table. He didn't take his usual seat; instead, he stood right beside Clara as she took the chair directly opposite the executive vice president.

"Mr. Reed, have you completely lost your mind?" shouted Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member. "That woman is Clara Murphy! Her father tried to bankrupt this firm years ago! She has no business being on this floor, let alone in our boardroom!"

Clara smiled—a cold, razor-sharp smile that made several directors shift uncomfortably in their seats.

"You're right, Mr. Pendelton," Clara said, her voice ringing clear and crisp across the silent room. "I am Clara Murphy. And I have every right to be here."

She reached into her designer briefcase, pulled out a thick, legal-bound document stamped with high-court seals, and slammed it down onto the mahogany table.

"In fact," Clara continued, locking her cold brown eyes onto a sweating, pale Julian Vance, "according to Section Four of the Reed Global Restructuring Act, holding thirty-four percent of the voting escrow shares gives me absolute veto power over every single transaction executed by this board for the last five years."

The room erupted into absolute chaos.
