Chapter 7 - The Alliance in the ShadowsThe private study of the Reed mansion was locked tight. The heavy oak door was bolted from the inside, the smart-blinds drawn shut to block out the afternoon sun.

Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Clara sat across from Malcolm at the massive mahogany desk. The raw, weeping grief of an hour ago had hardened into something much sharper—something cold, focused, and lethal. She had washed her face, changed into a simple black cashmere sweater, and tied her dark curls back into a sleek ponytail. She looked less like a homeless survivor and more like a corporate warrior preparing for blood.
"If Julian Vance orchestrated the entire hostile takeover behind your back," Clara said, her voice ice-cold as she tapped a finger against the incriminating financial records, "then he’s currently sitting in the CEO’s executive chair running Reed Global’s daily operations while you've been acting as the public face."
"Precisely," Malcolm replied, leaning back in his leather chair, resting his chin on his interlaced fingers. "When I discovered his embezzlement three years ago, I couldn't fire him outright. He had spent years embedding his loyalists across the board of directors. If I moved against him without absolute, ironclad proof of his ongoing illegal activities, the board would have sided with him, invoked my medical clause, and ousted me from my own company."
Clara narrowed her eyes. "So you've been biding your time. Waiting."
"Gathering evidence," Malcolm corrected. "And today, you walked into my house. Or rather, your little girl did."
Clara’s expression softened slightly as she thought of Evie, who was currently downstairs playing dress-up with Maisie under the watchful eye of a thoroughly bewildered Mrs. Gable.
"Evie is the reason we’re here," Clara murmured. "She told me she found a 'secret castle' with a nice little girl who shared her cookies. I didn't think... I didn't know it was yours."
"Fate works in strange ways," Malcolm said quietly. Then, his eyes flashed with a dangerous light. "Are you ready to finish what your father started, Clara?"
Clara looked down at the financial records, then raised her chin, her eyes flashing with a fierce, inherited defiance.
"What's the play?"
"Tomorrow morning is the quarterly board meeting," Malcolm said, leaning forward across the desk. "Julian Vance is planning to table a hostile buyout of a major international shipping firm—a deal that will siphon the last remaining liquid assets of Reed Global into an offshore account he controls. He thinks I'm checked out. He thinks I'm distracted."
Malcolm slid a clean, empty manila folder across the desk toward her.
"We walk into that boardroom together tomorrow morning," Malcolm continued, his voice dropping into a thrilling, conspiratorial whisper. "You won't just be a guest in my house, Clara. You will be introduced as the largest individual shareholder of Reed Global Enterprises, holding the controlling proxy votes your father left behind in his estate trust."

Clara’s breath hitched. "His trust... it wasn't liquidated?"
"I secretly bought out the liquidation receivers five years ago and held the shares in an anonymous escrow trust, waiting for the legal heir to step forward," Malcolm said, offering her a faint, grim smile. "Welcome home, Ms. Murphy. You own thirty-four percent of the company."
