Chapter 1 - The Shadow Below the BridgeThe rain had stopped, leaving behind a heavy, choking fog that clung to the asphalt like a shroud. Officer Natalie stood at the edge of the county road, her boots sinking into the wet mud beside the crumpled guardrail four miles from Andrew’s house. Below, swallowed by the dark canopy of pine trees and the churning swollen creek, sat the ruined shell of a blue pickup truck.

Its headlights were still weakly glowing, casting eerie, watery beams through the thick brush.
"State troopers are securing the perimeter," Officer Miller said, walking up behind her with a flashlight cutting through the mist. "They pulled the passenger door open. The cabin is empty."
Natalie’s heart dropped. "Empty? What about the driver?"
"Gone," Miller replied, shaking his head. "No body, no jacket, nothing. Just a smashed windshield and a puddle of dark fluid mixed with rainwater on the floor mat. But Natalie... look at this."
Miller shined his light on the steering column. Tangled tightly around the indicator stalk was a small, familiar silver chain with a worn brass key. It was the key to the back door of Andrew’s rental house.
"He didn't crash on his way back from the store," Natalie whispered, a cold chill running down her spine. "He crashed on his way there. That means he left the house four days ago, wrecked down here, and... where did he go?"
Before Miller could answer, Natalie’s phone buzzed aggressively in her tactical vest. It was a local news alert, already carrying a headline designed to destroy a man’s reputation before the sun even rose:
DEADBEAT DAD FLEES: 7-Year-Old Daughter Left to Starve as Local Man Vanishes After Horrific Crash!
"They're tearing him apart online," Natalie hissed, staring at the screen. "Every comment is calling him a monster. They think he abandoned his sick child and ran away to save his own skin."

"People love a villain," Miller muttered. "It’s easier to hate a monster than to look for a victim."
"Not on my watch," Natalie said, turning back toward her cruiser. "Get forensics down here to process this truck inch by inch. I'm going back to the hospital to check on Ashley. When that little girl wakes up, she’s going to tell us what really happened in those four dark days."
