Chapter 4 - The Hidden Vault Beneath the FloorboardsWithin twenty minutes, Detective Vance and Officer Natalie secured a rapid search warrant and returned to Andrew Miller’s small rental house. The crime scene tape fluttered violently in the wind as local reporters began gathering at the perimeter fence, cameras flashing through the rain.

"Keep the press back!" Miller shouted to the patrol officers stationed at the gate.
Inside, the house was frozen in time. The half-eaten bowl of soup still sat on the counter; the grocery list remained untouched.
Vance walked straight into the narrow kitchen, pulling a heavy crowbar from his trunk. "If there’s anything hidden under these floorboards, this is where a desperate man would put it."
Natalie followed him, shining her heavy-duty flashlight toward the pantry floor. "Look at the baseboard here. The nails are fresh. Someone pulled them out and hammered them back in recently."
With a sharp crack, Vance jammed the crowbar beneath the wooden planking and wrenched it upward. Old dust, mouse droppings, and splintered pine flew into the air.
Reaching into the dark cavity beneath the floor, Vance’s fingers brushed against something leather. He pulled out a heavy, weathered leather briefcase secured with a brass combination lock.
"Got it," Vance grunted, setting it on the kitchen table.
Natalie grabbed a hammer and struck the lock mechanism. It shattered instantly, the metal hinge springing open.
Inside wasn't just a brown envelope of legal papers. It was a dossier of terror.
Natalie pulled out a stack of photographs. They showed Elena Vance—the supposed drug-addicted, estranged mother—meeting in dark parking lots with a local city councilman known for real estate corruption, Arthur Sterling.
Beneath the photos lay certified bank statements showing massive cash deposits into Elena’s accounts—funds originating from a shell corporation tied to Sterling’s development firm.
And right on top was a signed, notarized custody relinquishment contract, dated just four days before Andrew vanished, marked with a giant red REJECTED scrawled across the signature line in Andrew's handwriting.
"This isn't a simple domestic dispute," Natalie whispered, staring at the documents in absolute horror. "This is a land grab."
"Explain," Vance demanded, leaning over the table.
"Look at this neighborhood," Natalie said, pointing to a map pinned inside the briefcase. "Every house on this block is slated for demolition to make way for a luxury high-rise commercial complex. All the tenants took buyouts months ago—except Andrew. He owned his home outright, inherited from his grandfather. He refused to sell."
Vance’s eyes narrowed as the puzzle pieces slammed into place. "And if he refused to sell, the developers couldn't get the zoning permits for the entire block."

"So they used Elena to manufacture a custody war," Natalie finished, her voice shaking with rage. "They threatened to take his daughter away unless he signed over the property rights. When he still refused... they didn't just target him legally. They silenced him."
Suddenly, the front door of the house swung open with a violent bang.
