Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call to the Architect of RuinsThe rain hammered against the glass of the closed pharmacy awning like a relentless gavel. Evelyn’s fingers, numbed by the bitter Chicago frost, traced the embossed lettering on Martin Hale’s business card.

Martin Hale. Managing Director, Apex Debt Recovery & Restructuring.

She pressed the call button. Before the third ring could finish its echo, the line clicked open.

"Evelyn?" Martin’s voice was instantly alert, devoid of any sleepy haze. "It’s past midnight. And given that you’re calling this encrypted line, I assume the fairy tale at Mercer Capital has officially turned into a tragedy."

"He threw me out, Martin," Evelyn said, her voice steady, stripping away every ounce of warmth she had ever wasted on Grant Mercer. "No coat worth mentioning, no money, and no access to my accounts. He just executed a public sham using fabricated system logs to frame me for data leakage."

A low, cold chuckle came through the speaker. "Grant Mercer is a boy playing with a hand grenade in a munitions warehouse. He thinks a last name shields him from arithmetic. Where are you?"

"Wabash Avenue. Standing in the freezing rain."

"Stay put," Martin commanded. "A car will be there in seven minutes. Bring your brain, your memory, and that cold fury you used to save his hide three times. It’s time to teach these aristocrats how a seamstress's daughter cuts fabric."

Seven minutes later, a matte-black Lincoln Navigator pulled to the curb. The door slid open, revealing not a driver, but Martin Hale himself, sitting amidst stacks of encrypted financial dossiers.

As Evelyn stepped inside, the heater blasted against her soaked wool coat. Martin handed her a steaming cup of black coffee and a heavy manila folder.

"Welcome to the real world, Evelyn," Martin said, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement. "While Grant is celebrating his acquisition of Sentinel Mutual tonight, he forgot one crucial detail: Sentinel Mutual isn't buying stability. They are buying a poisoned well. And Apex holds the promissory notes that can crack that well wide open."

Evelyn opened the folder. The first page was a cash-flow projection of Sentinel Mutual's hidden liabilities—liabilities that Grant Mercer, blinded by arrogance and rushed due diligence, had completely ignored.

A slow, dangerous smile touched Evelyn’s lips. "He wants to play executioner? Let's show him what a systemic liquidation looks like."
