Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the MachineThree weeks after her expulsion, Evelyn Hart did not exist on paper. Her old social security number was flagged under investigation by Mercer Capital’s legal compliance team, her previous apartment lease had been terminated by Grant’s proxy, and the financial press had dutifully published a brief, sanitized blurb about an "internal compliance restructuring" at Mercer Capital.

Inside a high-security conference room on the fifty-fifth floor of the Aon Center—far above Mercer Capital’s headquarters—Evelyn sat before a bank of triple monitors.

Her hair was cut shorter, styled in a sharp, uncompromising bob. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit purchased with a retainer advance from Apex—a suit that cost more than her mother’s first car, and fit like armor.

Martin walked in, tossing a fresh tablet onto the mahogany table.

"The board of Sentinel Mutual just signed off on the preliminary merger terms with Grant," Martin announced. "Grant is hosting a press gala tomorrow morning at the Drake Hotel to announce the final acquisition. He thinks he’s king of the world."

"He's riding a dead horse," Evelyn replied without looking away from her screen. "Look at this ledger entry from three days ago. Grant diverted four million dollars from Mercer Capital’s operational reserve to pad Sentinel’s liquidity report. That’s not just aggressive accounting. That’s securities fraud."

"Can we prove it?"

"Not yet," Evelyn said, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with rhythmic precision. "Grant used a shell company registered in the Caymans to mask the transfer. But he made a classic arrogance error. He used his personal assistant’s corporate IP address to authorize the wire override."

She tapped a key, and a complete digital footprint lit up the central monitor, linking the fraudulent transfer directly to Grant Mercer’s private terminal.

"Claire Nolan," Evelyn murmured.

"Who?" Martin asked.

"The junior legal associate I saw shaking in the hallway the night I was fired," Evelyn said, her eyes narrowing. "Grant used her credentials as a decoy. If the transaction blows up, Claire takes the fall. She’s sitting right in the lion's den, terrified, waiting for the axe to drop."

Martin leaned over the table, studying the data streams. "She’s a weak link. We snap her, and the whole house of cards collapses inward."

"No," Evelyn corrected softly. "We don't snap her yet. We protect her. We make her our inside anchor. Because when Grant signs that acquisition contract tomorrow morning, I want every single page of it to legally belong to Apex Debt Recovery. And that means we need Claire on the inside when the trap springs shut."
