Chapter 7 - The New EmpireThree months later, the glass-and-steel skyscraper formerly known as Mercer Capital bore a bold new name across its gleaming facade: Hart & Associates Global Restructuring.

From her corner office on the fifty-fifth floor—the very office Grant Mercer had once used to survey his kingdom—Evelyn Hart looked out over the sweeping, sunlit expanse of the Chicago skyline. The weather was warm, bright, and clear. No storms in sight.
A knock sounded at her door.
Claire Nolan stepped inside, holding a fresh tablet containing the morning’s global portfolio balance. Claire’s posture was confident, her eyes bright, her hands completely steady.
"Good morning, Ms. Hart," Claire said with a respectful smile. "The international restructuring audits for the Sentinel acquisition are fully complete. We are officially operating in thirty-two countries."
"Thank you, Claire," Evelyn replied, turning away from the window. "How is the new legal analyst training program going?"
"Excellently. We've hired twelve top graduates from local universities—all merit-based, zero nepotism."
Evelyn smiled. "Good. Never let anyone forget that talent protected by integrity is an unstoppable force."
As Claire exited the office, Evelyn walked back to her desk and opened her leather briefcase. Resting at the bottom, beneath her current strategic dossiers, was an old, worn business card with faded lettering: Martin Hale, Apex Debt Recovery.
Beside it lay Grant Mercer’s gold fountain pen—the very pen he had used to sign away his empire.

Evelyn picked up the pen, tested the weight of it in her hand, and placed it neatly into her desk drawer, right beside her mother’s old sewing kit.
Some things were meant to be preserved. Not as souvenirs of revenge, but as reminders of the exact moment a seamstress’s daughter learned how to rewrite the entire financial world.
