Chapter 4 - THE DIGITAL GHOSTMarco pulled his phone from his pocket, his eyes darting down to the glowing screen. A secure encrypted message had just come through from his head of security, David, stationed outside in the lead SUV.

“Sir, we traced the burner phone signal that tipped us off to this town. It didn’t come from a local tower. It was routed through a proxy server in Chicago, bouncing back to a residential IP address five miles from Mrs. Bellini’s cottage. We found a vehicle matching the description parked near the local diner. Plate registration is clean, but the driver just sped off.”

Marco cursed under his breath, his jaw tightening into a hard line. He looked back at Elena, who was standing a few feet away, clutching her arms as if trying to hold her shattered pieces together. Little Leo and Lily peeked out from behind her legs, their big amber eyes looking up at the strange, tall man with a mixture of fear and curiosity.

Marco’s chest constricted. Seeing his children—his flesh and blood—for the very first time was a surreal, overwhelming tsunami of emotion. He crouched down slowly, meeting the twins at eye level, ignoring the pouring rain leaking through the window frame.

"Hey there, champions," Marco said, his voice softening into a gentle, unfamiliar warmth that brought fresh tears to Elena’s eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, silver pocket watch, clicking the lid open to reveal a ticking mechanism that fascinated children. "I'm Marco. I'm... a very old friend of your mom's."

Lily stepped forward, her curiosity winning over her fear, and reached out a tiny finger to touch the gleaming silver metal. "It makes a ticking sound," she whispered.

"It does," Marco smiled, a sad, bittersweet curve of his lips. He looked up at Elena, his amber eyes pleading silently for understanding. "Elena, we need to get out of here. If someone led me to you, they're using us as pieces on a chessboard. Your safety, and the kids' safety, is compromised."

Elena shook her head, crossing her arms defensively. "I'm not going anywhere with you, Marco. How do I know you aren't part of this? How do I know this isn't some elaborate trap to take my kids away?"

"Take them away?" Marco stood up, a flash of frustration crossing his features, though his voice remained controlled. "Elena, look at them. Look at their eyes. Do you honestly think, after searching for you for three years and discovering I have children, I would ever let any harm come to them—or to you?"

Before Elena could answer, a loud, ear-splitting screech of tires echoed from outside the cottage, followed immediately by the harsh rattle of automatic gunfire.

Pop-pop-pop-pop!

"Get down!" Marco roared, lunging forward and tackling Elena and the twins to the floor just as a hail of bullets shattered the front windows, sending glass spraying across the living room.

Elena screamed, pulling Leo and Lily beneath her body, shielding them with her own flesh as plaster rained down from the ceiling.

"David! Status!" Marco shouted into the comms piece clipped to his collar, dragging himself across the floor toward the hallway while keeping a low profile.

"Sir! We're taking heavy fire from the tree line across the road!" David’s voice crackled back through the static, punctuated by the booming sound of return fire from the black SUVs. "Professional hit squad! They're using suppressed submachine guns! We're pinned!"

"Cover the back door! Do not let them flank us!" Marco ordered, crawling back into the master bedroom where Elena and the children were huddled in absolute terror.

"They found us," Elena whispered, her face completely drained of color, her eyes wide with primal panic. "They found us because of you, Marco!"

"No, Elena," Marco said, grabbing her shoulders and forcing her to look directly into his fierce, unyielding amber eyes. "They found us because someone wanted us to collide. But we are going to survive this. Together."

He grabbed the Beretta handgun from the bed, checked the magazine, and shoved it expertly into his waistband. He scooped Lily up into one arm while pulling Elena up with the other, his hand securely gripping Leo's small hand.

"We have a reinforced vehicle waiting in the back," Marco commanded, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a billionaire warlord who refused to lose his family twice. "Move, Elena. Now!"
