Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION IN THE DARKThe damp, metallic air of the abandoned hangar smelled of rust, old engine oil, and impending doom.

Victor Vance stood ten paces away, his silver hair catching the flickering light of a single overhead bulb. Two armed mercenaries flanked him, their assault rifles pointed lazily toward the floor, though their trigger fingers rested comfortably within striking distance.
"You've gotten sloppy in your old age, Victor," Marco said, his voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of fear as he positioned himself slightly in front of Elena. "Kidnapping your own pawns and staging theatrical reunions in a junkyard? What's the matter? Did the board of directors finally lock you out of your accounts?"
Victor chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. He pulled a gold-plated cigar cutter from his pocket, turning it over in his fingers. "Oh, my accounts are quite healthy, Marco. But wealth means nothing without control. And for five years, you and your precious Bellini empire denied me what was rightfully mine."
Victor’s cold eyes shifted past Marco, locking onto Elena.
"Ah, Elena. So tragic. Three years of living in a miserable West Virginia motel, changing diapers in secret, crying yourself to sleep because you believed your husband traded you for your own flesh and blood," Victor mocked, smiling cruelly. "Tell me, how did it feel? Did your heart break a little more every time you looked into those amber eyes?"
Elena stepped out from behind Marco, her face a mask of cold, concentrated fury. She looked past Victor at her sister. Clara was sobbing uncontrollably, her eyes wide with terror, mumbling muffled pleas through the duct tape.
"Clara," Elena whispered, her voice slicing through the cold air. "You did this. You took my life, you broke my heart, and you let me run into the dark with your unborn nephew and niece... all for money?"
Victor smirked. "Oh, don't blame her entirely, my dear. Clara was just a very desperate, very indebted actress playing a pre-scripted role. I gave her the blackjack winnings to dig her hole, and I offered her a shovel to climb out—provided she opened your penthouse door that night, slipped into your husband's bed while he was passed out in the study from my spiked whiskey, and waited for you to walk in."
Marco’s eyes flared with sudden realization. "The whiskey at the corporate dinner... you poisoned my drink."
"Just enough to knock out a rhinoceros for three hours," Victor smiled proudly. "Clara carried you into your own bed, stripped down, and set the stage. All Elena had to do was open the door, take the bait, and run away like a scared rabbit. And she played her part brilliantly."
"You monster," Elena hissed, taking a step forward, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides.
"Monster?" Victor’s smile vanished, replaced by a sudden, dark snarl. He snapped his fingers. One of the mercenaries stepped forward, shoving the barrel of his rifle against Clara’s temple. Clara screamed muffled terror into the tape.
"Drop your weapon, Marco, or I scatter your sister-in-law’s brains across this concrete floor right now," Victor ordered, his voice dropping into a lethal register.
Marco didn't hesitate. With slow, deliberate movements, he unclipped his tactical holster, drew his pistol, and laid it carefully on the concrete floor, sliding it away from his feet.

"Smart boy," Victor sneered, stepping closer, pulling a small silver flash drive from his coat pocket. "Now, this little USB contains the unedited security footage from that night—proof of Clara's staging, proof of my involvement, and the complete confession. All you have to do to get it... is sign over your controlling voting shares of Bellini Enterprises to my offshore trust."
Marco stared at the flash drive, his jaw tightening. A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the hangar as the ultimate choice hung in the balance: his empire, or his absolute vindication.
