Chapter 5 - THE ESCAPE FROM HOLLOW CREEKThe back door of the cottage splintered into kindling with a single, brutal kick.

"Go! Go! Go!" Marco shouted over the deafening cacophony of gunfire echoing from the front yard. He shoved Elena and Leo ahead of him into the torrential rain, shielding Lily against his chest with one arm while his other hand gripped the Beretta, pointing it toward the dark, muddy backyard.
The West Virginia forest loomed behind the property like a wall of black ink, the towering pine trees swaying violently in the storm. Through the sheets of rain, the sleek silhouette of the lead armored SUV idly waited by the shed, its engine idling with a low, predatory purr.
David, Marco’s head of security, was crouched behind the rear tire, firing a suppressed tactical rifle toward the treeline where muzzle flashes blinked like malevolent fireflies.
"Boss! They're pushing through the east ridge!" David yelled over the thunder. "We've got zero time!"
"Get in the vehicle! Now!" Marco ordered, hauling Elena and the twins toward the heavy passenger door. He yanked it open, practically throwing Elena and the kids into the armored backseat before slamming the heavy door shut, locking it instantly.
As Marco dove into the front passenger seat, bullets pinged off the titanium-reinforced plating of the SUV with terrifying, metallic screeches.
"Floor it, David! Get us off this mountain!" Marco roared.
The SUV lurched forward with a brutal burst of torque, tearing through the muddy lawn, smashing right through a wooden fence, and launching onto the winding gravel road. The vehicle fishtailed dangerously on the slick mud before regaining traction, rocketing away from the burning cottage into the dark abyss of the storm.
In the back seat, Elena sat paralyzed, clutching Leo and Lily tightly to her chest. The twins were crying softly, terrified by the loud noises and the blinding rain. Elena rocked them back and forth, her own tears mixing with the rainwater dripping from her hair.
She looked up. In the front passenger seat, Marco was calmly speaking into a secure satellite phone, coordinating backup and tracking routes with a chilling, tactical efficiency. The casual, wealthy businessman she had married in Chicago was entirely gone; in his place was a ruthless, powerful titan of industry ready to wage war.
The car sped through the winding mountain roads for twenty agonizing minutes before turning into the heavily guarded gates of a private airfield nestled deep in the valley. A sleek, private Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac, its turbine engines already whining, ready for immediate takeoff.
The SUV came to a screeching halt beside the aircraft's staircase.
Marco immediately pushed his door open, stepping out into the lashing rain, and pulled the back door open. He reached inside, his expression softening instantly as he looked at Elena and the shivering children.
"We're safe here," Marco said gently, extending a strong, calloused hand toward her. "The jet is fully armored. In two hours, we’ll be at my private estate in Virginia—a fortress no one can breach. Elena, please. Take my hand."
Elena looked from Marco’s outstretched hand to the warm, glowing interior of the private jet, and then down at her precious twins. She was exhausted, terrified, and completely out of options. The cottage in West Virginia was gone, her quiet life shattered beyond repair.
Slowly, deliberately, she placed her small hand into Marco’s strong grip.
Marco pulled her out of the vehicle, lifting her and the twins up the metal steps and into the sanctuary of the cabin. Once everyone was safely secured inside, Marco slammed the aircraft door shut, sealing them off from the storm, the bullets, and the ghosts of their past.
As the jet taxied down the runway and lifted off into the stormy night sky, Marco sat down across from Elena. The cabin was warm and silent, save for the low hum of the jet engines.
"You promised me answers, Marco," Elena said, her voice steady, laced with a dangerous edge. "You said someone framed us. You said someone orchestrated that night in Chicago. Who?"
Marco leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his amber eyes locking onto hers with a lethal, chilling certainty.
"The person who set us up," Marco whispered slowly, "is someone who had everything to gain from our destruction. Someone who knew our security codes, our schedules, and our deepest secrets."

He paused, letting the heavy words sink in.
"It was your sister, Elena. Or, at least... she was working directly with the person holding her strings."
