Chapter 3 - THE COLD COFFIN: THE MAFIA BOSS UNCOVERS A HORRIFIC SECRET IN THE WALLS

The explosion was controlled but devastating. Silas’s precision charge blew a four-foot hole through the bathroom’s drywall, shattering the hidden steel reinforcement and throwing Vincent and his men into the adjoining master bedroom of apartment 309.
Vincent coughed violently, his lungs burning from the gas, but he forced himself to his feet. He pulled his mask from his tactical vest, inhaling pure oxygen before passing it to Marcus.
"We don't leave," Vincent growled, his eyes burning with a primal, predatory rage. "They tried to kill us in my own house. Look around. Find out where that speaker came from."
Jago pulled a thermal scanner from his pack and swept the dust-choked bedroom. "Boss... look at the structural wall. The one shared with the building's main elevator shaft. The thermal signature is freezing cold, but there's a heat bloom right behind the brickwork."
Vincent walked to the back closet. He tore away the hanging rod and kicked the flimsy plaster backboard. Behind it lay a massive, industrial-grade steel door that was completely absent from the building's official blueprints. It was a hidden room, carved out of the dead space between apartments 308 and 309.
The steel door had a digital keypad, its light glowing a mocking red.
"Marcus. Bypass it."
Marcus stepped up, his hands steady despite the adrenaline. He connected a small cybernetic hacking rig to the keypad's maintenance port. "This is military-grade encryption, Vincent. This isn't a street gang. This is government or elite corporate tech."
"I don't care if it belongs to the Pope," Vincent said coldly. "Open it."
Ninety seconds of agonizing clicks later, the keypad beeped green. The heavy steel door hissed open, releasing a blast of freezing, sterile air that smelled faintly of formaldehyde and old blood.
They stepped inside, weapons ready.
The room was a high-tech medical laboratory hidden inside a derelict tenement building. Server racks hummed in the dark, their blue LED lights blinking like malevolent eyes. In the center of the room stood a massive, glass cylinder filled with a murky, amber liquid.
Vincent walked slowly toward the cylinder. His breath hitched.
Inside the liquid, suspended by wires and respiratory tubes, was a human being. It was a woman, her hair floating like seaweed, her skin translucent and pale. Her eyes were closed, but her chest was rising and falling with the agonizingly slow rhythm of a mechanical ventilator.
Monitors displayed her vitals: Heart rate: 32 BPM. Core Temp: 88°F.
"My God," Marcus whispered, shining his light on a medical clipboard attached to the base of the tank. "It's Dr. Clara Vance. She didn't die in March. They faked her death."
"Then who is in the bathtub?" Jago asked.
"A Jane Doe. A John Doe. Someone expendable from the streets to close the police file," Vincent said, his jaw clenching so hard it ached. He looked closer at the machine. A mechanical piston was attached to the back of the tank, timed to strike a heavy iron plate every few minutes.
Thump... Thump... Thump...
It was automated. The SOS signal wasn't a manual cry for help from a prisoner. It was a continuous broadcast engineered by Clara Vance before she was completely incapacitated, or by someone else who wanted this laboratory found before the demolition crews blew the building to hell.
"Look at the data logs," Vincent ordered.
Marcus tapped into the central terminal. His face went completely pale, the color draining from his lips until they were white. "Vincent... this isn't just a corporate lab. BioGen Global was researching a genetic mapping project for executive life extension. They were using residents of the Harbor View apartments as unauthorized test subjects. Over thirty people have disappeared from this building over the last three years, listed as 'transferred' or 'evicted'."
"And who authorized the project?" Vincent asked, a terrible premonition gripping his chest.
Marcus looked up from the screen, his hands trembling. "The lead investor... the man who provided the capital and secured the protection from the Mayor's office... Vincent, it’s a shell corporation registered to a blind trust in the Caymans."

"Give me the name, Marcus."
"The primary signature on the acquisition files... is yours."
