Chapter 5 - THE FINAL DEMOLITION COUNTDOWN: RACING AGAINST THE CLOCK OF DEATH

The red emergency lights in the hidden lab began to spin, casting long, bloody shadows across the glass cylinder. A synthetic voice chimed over the intercom:
Warning. Structural demolition sequence initiated. T-minus 15 minutes to payload detonation.
Vincent didn't waste a second screaming at the locked door. He sprinted to the central console. Marcus had wiped the system, but he had underestimated Vincent’s own technical preparation. Vincent pulled a heavy, military-grade tactical knife from his boot and jammed it into the control panel of the glass tank, short-circuiting the lock mechanism.
The amber liquid began to drain rapidly, foaming at the bottom.
Clara Vance collapsed forward, coughing up thick fluid as the respiratory tube detached from her throat. Vincent caught her before she hit the metal grate. She was frail, her skin icy cold, but her eyes snapped open—wide, terrified, and piercingly intelligent.
"Calder..." she gasped, recognizing his face from the files her captors had left on the desk. "They... they are going to bury everything."
"Not tonight," Vincent said, lifting her over his shoulder. She weighed barely ninety pounds. "Can you walk?"
"No... my legs... nerve blockers," she whispered.
Vincent looked at the sealed escape hatch. There was no breaking through it. He turned back to the hole they had blown into apartment 309's bedroom. He ran through the dust, carrying the scientist into the main corridor of the third floor.
The building was already screaming. Down in the basement, the first set of low-yield concussive charges detonated, designed to weaken the load-bearing pillars. The floor tilted violently beneath his feet. Dust and concrete chunks fell from the ceiling like a gray snowstorm.
T-minus 10 minutes.
Vincent ran to apartment 308. He kicked the door open with a brutal strike.
Inside, Ellie Harper was sitting on her small sofa, her arms wrapped around a worn teddy bear, crying hysterically as the building shook. Her mother, a tired-looking woman in a library uniform, was frantically trying to pull her toward the door, paralyzed by terror.
"Who are you?!" the mother screamed as a massive, scarred man carrying a half-dead woman burst into her living room.
"If you want to live, you come with me right now!" Vincent roared over the sound of a second explosion ripping through the lower levels. "The building is collapsing! Move!"
He didn't wait for her compliance. He grabbed Ellie by the back of her blue dress, tucking her under his free arm while maintaining his grip on Clara Vance. The mother, seeing the raw, unyielding authority in his eyes, didn't argue. She grabbed her purse and ran beside him into the crumbling hallway.
The main stairwell was gone, blocked by a massive cave-in of concrete blocks from the fourth floor.
"The fire escape!" Vincent yelled, directing them toward the window at the end of the hall.
He shattered the glass with his elbow, ignoring the deep gash it left in his forearm. Outside, the storm was howling, the iron fire escape slick with ice and rain. Below them, in the staging area across the street, Vincent could see three unmarked black vans and a dozen heavily armed men in tactical gear—Marcus’s private security force, waiting to shoot anyone who survived the collapse.
"They have the perimeter covered," Clara Vance warned, her teeth chattering against his shoulder. "We won't make it to the street."
Vincent looked down at the dark, churning waters of the harbor, sitting directly beneath the eastern wing of the building. The drop was forty feet.
"We aren't going to the street," Vincent said, looking at Ellie’s mother. "Can you swim?"
She looked at the black water below and swallowed hard, her face white with terror. But she looked at her daughter, then at Vincent, and nodded.
"Hold onto her," Vincent ordered, passing Ellie to her mother. "Jump on my count. Three... Two..."

Before he could say one, the roof of Building C gave way. A massive section of the upper floors collapsed inward, sending a shockwave of concrete and steel rushing down the corridor toward them.
Vincent grabbed Clara Vance and threw himself over the railing into the empty air just as the entire third floor dissolved into a ball of fire and thunder.
