Chapter 7 - THE REVENGE OF THE PHANTOM INVESTMENT: THE METASTASIS OF BIOGEN GLOBAL

The silver dollar Ellie Harper had handed Vincent Calder sat on the pristine mahogany desk of his new operations hub—a highly secure bunker beneath a decommissioned shipyard on the edges of Locust Point. The media circus surrounding the collapse of Building C and the subsequent arrest of the Mayor had begun to plateau into a tense, uneasy silence. The city thought the monster had been slain.
Vincent knew better. A hydra doesn't die just because you cut off one of its heads; the remaining ones just get hungry.
"We have a problem, Vincent," Dr. Clara Vance said, slamming a heavy tactical laptop onto the table. Her physical recovery over the last three weeks had been nothing short of miraculous, driven by an unyielding desire for vengeance. "The data I pulled from the hidden lab... it’s mutating. The offshore accounts Marcus was using weren't just tied to BioGen Global. They were tied to a parent entity called Aethelgard Holdings."
Vincent didn't look up from his glass of scotch. "Aethelgard. A European sovereign wealth fund. They specialize in buying up distressed medical infrastructure."
"It’s worse than that," Clara said, her fingers flying across the keyboard to display a massive web of encrypted global transactions. "BioGen wasn't just doing human experimentation for executive life extension. That was the cover story they fed to Marcus to keep him greedy. The true scope of the project was something called Protocol 9. They were developing a targeted cellular pathogen designed to wipe out specific genetic lineages—essentially, a localized ethnic and socioeconomic cleansing tool."
Vincent’s gaze sharpened, his eyes narrowing to icy slits. "And they were testing it on the residents of my buildings."
"Yes. Because low-income populations, immigrants, and marginalized communities have no legal footprint in the high courts. If they die of an unexplained respiratory failure, the coroner signs it off as pneumonia or drug abuse," Clara explained, her voice trembling with rage. "But Marcus’s death didn't stop it. The data transmission logs show that forty-eight hours before Building C was demolished, the complete genetic synthesis files were uploaded to a secure server located in the high-security vault of the Veritas International Bank in downtown Baltimore."
"The Veritas vault," Vincent murmured. "It’s a subterranean fortress. It sits five floors beneath the street level, protected by biometric scanners, seismic sensors, and a private tactical garrison that answers to no municipal authority."
Suddenly, the steel door of the bunker opened, and Jago walked in. He was covered in sweat, his tactical vest torn. He had been one of the few who remained fiercely loyal to Vincent, having survived the purge of Marcus's faction.
"Boss, we’ve got a situation at the safe house," Jago said, his voice laced with panic. "The perimeter was breached twenty minutes ago. Professional hitters. No badges, no insignia. They didn't come for money. They came for the girl."
Vincent stood up so fast his chair flew backward, crashing against the concrete wall. The air in the room instantly turned to sub-zero temperatures.
"Ellie?" Vincent asked, his voice low, vibrating with a lethal energy that made even Jago take a step back.
"Her mother managed to hide her in the floorboards we reinforced, but they took the mother, boss. They left a message carved into the kitchen table." Jago held up a photograph.
Carved into the polished oak was a single, chilling phrase: THE COINS HAVE EXPIRED. BRING THE FLASH DRIVE TO VERITAS BY MIDNIGHT, OR THE LITTLE BIRD’S MOTHER DIES ON LIVE TELEVISION.

Vincent walked over to the desk, picked up the silver dollar Ellie had given him, and slipped it into his breast pocket. He checked the action on his custom Kimber .45 pistol, the metallic slide clicking with a terrifying finality.
"They want a war," Vincent whispered, looking at Clara and Jago. "They think because Marcus failed, they can step into my city and dictate terms. Gather the remaining men, Jago. Every rifle, every ounce of plastic explosive, every favors we are owed by the dockworkers and the street crews. Tonight, we aren't just robbing a bank. We are tearing the heart out of Aethelgard."
