Chapter 9 - THE VERITAS BLOODCOVENANT: A BROTHER'S TREASON AND THE ULTIMATE PRIZE

The floor of the vault chamber was cold, polished granite. Vincent stood ten feet from Julian Vance, the flash drive held between them like a piece of meat between two wolves.

"You look tired, Vincent," Julian mocked, adjusting his cuffs. "The life of a savior doesn't suit you. You're a killer. A thief. You've spilled more blood in this harbor than the entire fishing fleet combined. Why do you care about a little girl and her librarian mother?"

"Because they paid their bills," Vincent said calmly. "And in my world, a contract is sacred. You corporate suits think you can change the rules because you wear a tie. But the concrete doesn't care about your stock portfolio."

"A beautiful sentiment. Let's see if it protects you from a kinetic payload," Julian sneered, raising his hand to signal his snipers hidden in the upper galleries.

"Julian, stop!" Clara Vance screamed, stepping out onto the catwalk above, her weapon aimed directly at her brother’s chest. "It’s over! The data isn't just on that drive. I’ve already scheduled an automated global broadcast to every international intelligence agency! If we don't enter the termination code within five minutes, Aethelgard’s entire global network will be dismantled by the ICC!"

Julian’s face twisted into an expression of absolute, feral rage. "You stupid, idealistic bitch! You always ruined everything! You thought you were saving humanity with your research, but humanity is a disease! We are the cure!"

He drew a sleek, golden pistol from his waistband and aimed it at Clara.

BANG.

The sound didn't come from Julian’s gun.

It came from the dark corner of the vault entrance. Silas—the enforcer who had betrayed Vincent alongside Marcus—stepped into the light, his rifle smoking. But he hadn't shot Clara. He had shot Julian’s primary mercenary, the man holding Sarah Harper.

"What?!" Julian screamed, spinning around as the mercenary collapsed to the floor, blood pooling on the granite.

Silas looked at Vincent, his face covered in scars from the Building C explosion. "Marcus was a traitor, Vincent. But he told me you were soft. He didn't tell me we were working for people who wanted to poison our own kids with biological weapons. My daughter lives in South Baltimore, you son of a bitch."

The vault instantly erupted into a chaotic firefight. Jago opened fire from the upper catwalk, taking out Julian’s remaining guards. Silas charged forward, using his massive frame to shield Sarah Harper from the crossfire, dragging her behind a heavy titanium safety deposit box.

Julian Vance, realizing the tide had turned, lunged for the central mainframe terminal in the center of the vault, his fingers frantically slamming into the biometric scanner. "If I can't have the city, no one will! Protocol 9 is executing now! The automated ventilation systems in every public school and library in Baltimore are connected to the delivery vectors! It releases in three minutes!"

"Vincent!" Clara screamed, throwing herself down the stairs. "The override terminal requires a dual physical key encryption! The primary key is around Julian’s neck—the secondary key is the silver dollar!"

Vincent’s heart hammered against his ribs. The silver dollar Ellie had given him—it wasn't just a coin. Clara had modified its molecular composition with a micro-transponder before Ellie returned it to him, knowing that if they ever needed to force their way into Veritas's main infrastructure, they would need a hardware token that the bank's digital defenses wouldn't recognize as a standard hacking tool.

Julian turned, his face pale as Vincent advanced on him like an unstoppable force of nature, ignoring the bullets grazing his shoulder.

"You're a relic, Calder!" Julian screamed, firing his golden gun wild. "You're a dinosaur! The future belongs to us!"

Vincent closed the distance in a fraction of a second. He gripped Julian’s wrist, twisting it until the bones shattered with a sickening pop, sending the golden gun clattering away. With his other hand, Vincent slammed Julian against the titanium mainframe console, tearing the silver key card from his neck.

"The future," Vincent growled into Julian’s ear, his voice dripping with absolute malice, "is currently out of stock."
