Chapter 8 - THE OUTLAW ALLIANCE: DOWN INTO THE PIT OF THE VERITAS FORTRESS

At 11:43 PM, a massive electrical surge hit the downtown grid of Baltimore. The streetlights flickered and died, plunging the financial district into total darkness. The backup generators of the Veritas International Bank kicked in within four seconds, their low hum echoing through the empty, rain-slicked avenues.
But four seconds was all Vincent Calder needed.
Through the subterranean access tunnels beneath the city’s sewer system, three figures moved with silent, military precision. Vincent led the way, flanked by Jago and Dr. Clara Vance, who carried a localized electromagnetic pulse (EMP) device disguised as a medical briefcase.
"The bank's internal security consists of twenty-four tier-one private contractors," Clara whispered into her headset as they reached the massive outer concrete wall of the vault's foundation. "They have thermal imaging cameras covering every square inch of the corridor ahead. If we step through that door, we'll be turned into swiss cheese before we can draw a weapon."
"They are looking for a tactical entry," Vincent said, pulling a blueprint from his tactical tablet. "They aren't looking for the people who built the city."
He tapped the concrete wall. "Jago. The foundation of this bank was poured in 1974 by the Maroni family. My mentor, Don Carmine, oversaw the construction. He always put an emergency escape hatch in the concrete design of every major financial building he built, just in case the feds came knocking with a seizure warrant."
Vincent pushed a specific structural seam in the concrete. With a grinding sound of ancient gears, a four-foot slab of reinforced stone swung inward, revealing a dusty, narrow passage that bypassed the thermal security corridors entirely.
They emerged directly into the secondary observation deck overlooking the central vault chamber.
Below them, standing in the middle of the high-tech vault, was a man wearing a pristine, white bespoke suit that contrasted sharply with the dark, brutalist architecture of the bank. He was middle-aged, his silver hair perfectly coiffed, holding a high-end tablet. Beside him stood two heavily armed mercenaries holding Ellie’s mother, Sarah Harper, by her arms. She was bruised, her lip bleeding, but her eyes were defiant.
"Mr. Calder!" the man in the white suit called out into the empty air, his voice echoing off the steel walls. "I know you're here. You're a creature of habit. You can't resist a direct challenge to your authority. I am Julian Vance—yes, Clara's brother, and the executive director of Aethelgard Holdings."
Clara gasped from the shadows, her hand flying to her mouth. "Julian... no... you died in the lab fire ten years ago..."
"I changed employers, sister!" Julian laughed, a cold, psychopathic sound. "BioGen gave me the resources to transcend the limitations of this pathetic city! Now, Vincent, step out. Bring the master encryption key, or I will have my men drop Sarah Harper into the bank's automated industrial shredder beneath the floorboards."
Vincent didn't hesitate. He stepped out onto the metal catwalk, his hands raised, his face completely devoid of fear.
"I'm here, Julian," Vincent said, his voice echoing with authority. "You wanted the key. Here it is." He held up the waterproof flash drive between his two fingers.
"Excellent," Julian smiled, signaling his guards. "Bring it down. And let's see if the great mafia king of Baltimore is as fast with his mouth as he is with his rumors."

As Vincent walked down the iron spiral staircase, his mind was counting the seconds. He knew that Julian Vance didn't just want the key; he wanted to eliminate the last obstacle to Aethelgard’s absolute control over the Eastern Seaboard. It was a trap within a trap.
But Vincent Calder had built his entire life on surviving the traps of lesser men.
