Chapter 4 - The Ghost of SophiaBefore Vince could take two steps into the main room, the front door of apartment seven exploded inward with a deafening crash.

The heavy wood splintered off its hinges, slamming against the interior wall with enough force to crack the plaster. Standing in the shattered doorway was Aleandro Castellano, flanked by Marcus and four elite operatives clad in tactical gear, their suppressed firearms leveled with terrifying precision.

The temperature in the room dropped instantly.

Vince froze mid-step, his pistol half-drawn from his jacket holster. He stared at Aleandro in sheer, unadulterated terror. The crime lord looked less like a man and more like an executioner stepping straight out of hell, his eyes blazing with cold, calculating fury.

"Drop the weapon," Aleandro commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a razor blade.

"Castellano—wait!" Vince stammered, his hands shaking as he tried to back toward the broken kitchen door. "We were just... we were just following orders from—"

"I don't care whose orders you were following," Aleandro interrupted, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "You broke into a building under my protection. You threatened a dying woman. And worst of all... you woke a child."

From the corner of the room, Annie stirred. The sudden noise startled her, and she let out a soft, frightened whimper, pulling Aleandro's oversized coat tighter around her small shoulders.

Aleandro’s gaze flicked toward the corner for a fraction of a second, softening with a humanity that none of his enemies had ever lived to see. Then, his eyes snapped back to Vince with lethal intensity.

"Marcus," Aleandro said softly. "Take care of the trash."

Before Vince could pull the trigger, Marcus moved with lightning speed. Two muffled thuds echoed through the apartment. Vince and his accomplice crumpled to the floor without making a sound. The third thug scrambled backward through the broken kitchen window into the fire escape, fleeing into the rainy night like a rat abandoning a sinking ship.

Aleandro stepped over the fallen men, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the floorboards. He walked past Ruth Bennett, who stood frozen with the brass candlestick still clutched in her hand, and knelt down beside the small mattress where Annie was rubbing her eyes.

"Hey, little one," Aleandro said, his voice remarkably gentle as he reached out and brushed a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead. "It's okay. I'm here."

Annie looked up at him, her wide brown eyes blinking in the dim light. "Sir... you came back."

"I told you," Aleandro replied, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his lips. "It's Aleandro."
