Chapter 5 - The Hidden Truth in the LocketRuth Bennett lowered the candlestick, her knees finally giving out. She sank back into her armchair, breathing heavily, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her tired cheeks.

Aleandro stood up, walking slowly toward the scratched wooden dresser where the tilted photograph sat alongside a small, velvet-lined jewelry box. He picked up the photograph, staring at the young woman with long dark hair holding a gray cat.

The resemblance was striking. It wasn't just a coincidence anymore. It was an undeniable, genetic certainty.

"Sophia," Aleandro whispered, his thumb tracing the glass of the frame. He turned his piercing gaze toward the older woman. "She looks like her. Every single feature. Tell me why you looked at me the way you did in the stairwell, Mrs. Bennett. Tell me why you thought I was coming to take her away."

Ruth looked up, her chest heaving as she fought for every breath. "Because ten years ago, you swore you would destroy everyone connected to the leak that destroyed your syndicate. You hunted down my daughter's fiancé, you tore apart our family name, and Sophia had to run into the night to save her unborn child from being caught in the crossfire of your war."

Aleandro’s breath caught in his throat. The world around him seemed to tilt on its axis. "Unborn child? Sophia was pregnant when she left?"

"She didn't tell you because she was trying to protect you from the true traitors inside your inner circle—men like Salvatore Moretti, who fabricated the evidence against her," Ruth said, her voice shaking with righteous anger and exhaustion. "She died a year ago, Mr. Castellano. She died in a cold hospital room while you were sitting in your penthouse building an empire on lies. And I raised Annie in the shadows, praying to God every single day that you would never find out she existed."

The confession hung in the air like a physical blow. Aleandro staggered back a step, the photograph trembling in his grip. All these years, he had believed Sophia betrayed him. All these years, he had waged war against ghosts, never knowing that the real enemies had been whispering poison in his ear while stealing his family away.

"Marcus," Aleandro said, his voice trembling with a rage so deep it defied description.

"Yes, Boss?" Marcus stepped back inside from the kitchen.

"Burn Moretti’s operations to the ground. Every warehouse, every dock, every offshore account. Leave nothing standing. And bring Moretti to me alive. I want to have a little conversation about my family."
