Chapter 1 - THE UNTOUCHED SHADOWSThe scene inside the master bedroom defied every standard protocol we had been trained to execute.

There was no blood. No signs of a struggle. No shattered glass or overturned furniture.
Instead, the room was pristine—unnaturally so. The sheets were drawn up neatly to the chests of both parents, Mark and Sarah Miller. Their hands were folded calmly across their torsos, as if placed there deliberately by a mortician preparing a open-casket viewing. But what made three seasoned officers freeze in place was the air itself. A faint, sweet scent of almond and ozone filled the bedroom, mixed with a chilling temperature drop that felt almost artificial.
"Check for pulses, now," I barked, breaking the heavy silence.
Officer Ramirez stepped forward, his gloved fingers reaching for Mark’s carotid artery. The second his skin touched the man’s neck, Ramirez jumped back, a involuntary gasp escaping his lips.
"He’s cold as ice, Chief. Both of them are. But look closer..."
I stepped up to the bed and shone my flashlight directly onto Sarah’s face. Her eyes were open, staring blankly at the ceiling. Beneath her skin, her veins weren't the normal faded blue; they had turned a vivid, glowing shade of deep purple, branching across her cheekbones like delicate ink webs.
Suddenly, my police radio crackled to life, static tearing through the quiet house. “Unit 4, be advised... dispatcher just received a second emergency call from the same address.”
My stomach dropped. I looked back down the hallway where the six-year-old girl, Lily, was standing quietly with her stuffed rabbit.

"Dispatch, that's impossible," I whispered into my lapel mic. "We are inside the residence right now. The only survivor is the child."
"Negative, Unit 4," the dispatcher replied, her voice trembling slightly over the frequency. "The caller identifies himself as Mark Miller. He says he’s locked in his basement... and that someone is pretending to be his daughter upstairs."
