Chapter 7 - INFECTION PROTOCOL"Chief! Come in!" Ramirez’s radio squealed with panic from the surface. "The perimeter officers... they're collapsing! Their veins... they're turning purple! Something is in the air supply of the vehicles!"

The timer on the rabbit clicked down: 00:42.

"Jenkins, get Mark out of here now!" I shouted, firing two rounds at the entity.

The bullets struck the girl’s chest, but instead of blood, a dense violet vapor sprayed into the air. The entity didn't fall. It simply tilted its head, its skin fracturing like brittle porcelain to reveal a mass of dark, tendril-like fibers underneath.

"You cannot quarantine what has already spread, Chief," the entity echoed, its voice now amplifying through the underground facility. "The 911 call was broadcast across your department's public band. Every dispatcher, every officer who listened to that little girl's voice... downloaded the audio frequency that triggers the cellular shift."

My head began to throb violently. I looked down at my own hand holding the service weapon.

Beneath my tactical gloves, right at my wrist, bright purple veins were beginning to bloom.
