Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW IN THE CAPITAL

The encrypted file on the flash drive wasn’t just a random list of names; it was a digital manifest of the upper echelon of the Apex Syndicate—a web of corrupt federal judges, corrupt politicians, and high-ranking intelligence officials stretching all the way from Cleveland to Washington, D.C.
I forwarded the decrypted files directly to Detective Thomas Vance within seconds.
Twenty minutes later, my phone rang. Vance’s voice was tense, laced with a mixture of shock and suppressed fury.
"Clara, where did you get this drive?" Vance demanded, background noise indicating he was already in his car with sirens wailing. "This list features Judge Howard Sterling—no relation to Julian, but a powerful federal magistrate who oversees high-profile white-collar appeals in the District of Columbia. If Judge Howard is compromised, half of our federal indictments could be thrown out before they even reach a grand jury."
"Julian had a safety net," I said calmly, looking out the frost-covered window at the snowy garden. "He thought that even if he fell, his co-conspirators in D.C. would pull the strings to get him out. But he underestimated his own ego. He left the keys to his entire underground kingdom right in his desk drawer."

"We need to move fast," Vance said urgently. "Federal Marshals are already securing the holding facility where Julian is locked up. Someone on that list is going to try to silence him permanently before he can cut a plea deal with the DOJ."
"Let them try," I replied coldly. "Julian wanted to play a high-stakes game. Now he gets to face the real apex predators."
