Chapter 5 - THE ALLIANCE IN THE SHADOWSWe spent the night in an abandoned hunting cabin five miles deep into the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a rustic shelter my father and I had built years ago and kept off the official grid.

Caled sat by the small stone fireplace, warming his hands over a crackling fire we built in an old rusted drum, while I spread out the high-resolution photographs of the documents across a wooden workbench.

"We have the proof now, Mom," Caleb said, staring into the flames. "The shell companies, the fraudulent signatures, the insurance policies, the communication with Dr. Vance. We can take this straight to the FBI."

"Not yet," I replied, tracing the signature on the Cayman Islands incorporation papers with my thumb. "Julian has deep roots in federal law enforcement here. A local field office could have agents compromised by his network. If we go in halfway, he’ll find out, wipe the servers, and vanish across international borders before an arrest warrant is even signed."

"Then what's our play?" Caleb asked, looking up with fierce determination in his eyes. "We can't hide in the woods forever."

"We don't hide," I said, a cold smile touching my lips—a smile I inherited straight from my father, a man who never backed down from a fight. "We lure him into the open. We make him think he’s won, and at the exact moment he reaches out to claim his prize, we pull the rug out from under him."

"How?"

"Detective Marcus Vance," I said, leaning forward.

Caled blinked. "Vance? Isn't that the doctor’s last name?"

"Not Dr. Harrison Vance," I corrected. "His older brother, Detective Thomas Vance. He’s the head of the Cleveland Police Department’s Major Financial Crimes Unit. For years, he’s been trying to nail a shadow syndicate operating out of downtown Cleveland—a syndicate that launders money through real estate and fraudulent life insurance claims. I happen to know my father helped Thomas Vance establish a confidential lead years ago."

"Do you trust him?" Caleb asked cautiously.

"I trust that Thomas Vance hates corruption more than anything else in this city," I said firmly. "And if we hand him a multi-million-dollar conspiracy tied directly to Julian, he won't be able to look away."

The next morning, using a secure burner phone we bought at a roadside gas station, I dialed Detective Vance’s direct line.

"Detective Vance," a gravelly, authoritative voice answered on the second ring.

"Detective, my name is Clara Sterling," I said, keeping my voice steady. "I have twenty-four million reasons why your primary suspect in the Apex Syndicate is currently sitting in a mansion in Shaker Heights. And if you don't meet me at the old lighthouse by the breakwall in one hour, he’s going to murder me to collect."

There was a heavy silence on the line for three seconds.

Then, Detective Vance spoke: "I'll be there in forty minutes. Don't move."
