Chapter 7 - THE ANNIVERSARY TRAPSunday evening arrived with a heavy, suffocating blanket of autumn fog rolling in from Lake Erie.

The dining room of our Cleveland mansion was lit by the soft, romantic glow of flickering candles. A bottle of vintage 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon sat uncorked on the mahogany table, breathing beside two crystal glasses.

Julian walked down the stairs wearing his sharpest navy blazer, looking every bit the successful, loving corporate executive.

"Happy anniversary, sweetheart," Julian said, walking over and placing a gentle kiss on my cheek. His lips felt cold against my skin. "Fourteen years. I can't believe how fast the time has gone."

"Me neither, Julian," I said, smiling warmly as I poured him a glass of wine. "It feels like a lifetime."

"You look stunning tonight, Clara," he murmured, taking the glass from my hand. He swirled the deep red liquid, his eyes fixed on mine with an intense, hypnotic gaze. "To many more years."

"To many more years," I echoed, raising my glass.

Neither of us drank.

Julian set his glass down on the table, his smile shifting into something darker, sharper, and deeply calculating. The mask of the doting husband slipped away, replaced by the cold ambition of a man who had calculated every single variable.

"You know, Clara," Julian said softly, leaning back in his chair. "You’ve been acting a little strange this week. Going through the study, asking questions about the business... it makes a man wonder."

"Wonder what, Julian?" I asked, my voice completely steady.

"Whether you finally figured it out," he replied smoothly, reaching into his inner jacket pocket.

He didn't pull out a gun. He pulled out a small, sleek metallic pen—the exact same pen he had used to sign the Cayman Islands documents, fitted with a micro-needle containing the clear paralytic compound Dr. Harrison Vance had provided.

"It’s sad, really," Julian sighed, shaking his head with feigned sorrow. "You inherited all this wealth, but you never understood how heavy it is to carry. Twenty-four million dollars will do amazing things for the foundation I’m building in Zurich. You should be proud to be a part of it."

I looked across the table at him, feeling no fear—only a profound, liberating surge of absolute power.

"You really think you won, don't you, Julian?" I asked softly.

May you like

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"

Before he could raise the pen, the heavy oak front door of the mansion blew open with a deafening crash.
