Chapter 11 - The Breach

The thunderous concussions of the flash-bang grenades rolled down the concrete stairwells of the federal parking structure, turning the red-lit cavern into a disoriented zone of smoke and echoing gunfire. Agent Miller staggered backward, his pristine facade cracking as the high-frequency detonations scrambled his tactical comms.

"Secure the perimeter! Take the stairs!" a voice roared through the smoke—not Miller’s corrupted detail, but an independent tactical unit led by federal marshals who had been tracking Miller’s rogue badge for months.

Grace spun around, her eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated panic. The carefully constructed web of deception, forged over years of staged deaths and offshore accounts, was burning down in real-time. "Get to the vehicle! Now!" she screamed at her driver, abandoning all pretense of cool composure.

I didn't hesitate. With Nora clutched tightly against my chest, I dropped to the concrete, rolling behind a massive reinforced concrete pillar just as a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed up the drywall above our heads. Wood splinters and concrete dust rained down on us.

"Ethan! Over here!" Caleb yelled, firing a calculated burst from his sidearm toward the rogue security guards, providing just enough cover for us to scramble toward a maintenance alcove.

Grace’s SUV squealed in protest, rubber burning against the floor as it accelerated toward the upper ramp, leaving Miller and his guards exposed. Within seconds, federal marshal teams swarmed the exits, boxing the vehicle in from both sides. The heavy armored transport vehicles slammed their bumpers against the SUV, forcing it to a violent, screeching halt against a concrete pillar.

Miller lunged for his sidearm, but Caleb was faster. A swift, brutal sweep of Caleb’s boot sent Miller crashing hard to the ground, his face colliding with the oil-stained concrete.

"It's over, Grace!" I shouted, stepping out from the alcove, setting Nora down behind Caleb with strict instructions to stay low. I walked toward the trapped SUV as the marshals wrenched the doors open.

Grace was hauled out onto the concrete, her designer jacket torn, her hair wild. She looked up at me, her green eyes blazing with a venomous fury that surpassed even Vanessa’s.

"You think this is a victory, Ethan?" she hissed, spit flying from her lips as the heavy steel cuffs clicked around her wrists. "Look at the time. Look at the network. I was just a symptom. The system that protects people like me is far bigger than a federal building in San Diego."

Before she could say another word, a marshal shoved her into the back of a secure transport van, slamming the heavy door shut.
