Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The trial of The State of California v. Vanessa Reynolds and Colin Vance lasted precisely four days. It wasn't because the defense mounted a formidable challenge—they didn't. Faced with Caleb’s digital forensics, the unedited video logs of Vanessa doctoring Nora’s drinks, and the damning paper trail of offshore accounts linked to Colin’s defunct law firm, Vanessa’s defense attorney abandoned ship on the second afternoon.
Sitting in the packed courtroom, I watched my former wife from the gallery. She didn't look like the poised, immaculate woman who used to greet me with chamomile tea and affectionate kisses. Her hair was unwashed, her orange jumpsuit hung loosely on her frame, and her eyes were hollow, stripped of all arrogance.
When the judge read the verdict—guilty on all counts of conspiracy to commit fraud, child endangerment, and administration of noxious substances—Vanessa didn't even flinch. She simply stared down at the defense table, her hands clenched tightly in her lap.
Colin received twenty-five years without the possibility of parole due to his prior convictions in similar asset-stripping schemes across Nevada and Arizona. Vanessa was handed an eighteen-year sentence. As the bailiffs cuffed them and led them away through the heavy oak doors, Vanessa turned her head for a fraction of a second, her eyes locking onto mine.
There was no apology in her gaze. Only a bitter, lingering malice that sent a slight chill down my spine.

"Let's go home, Ethan," Caleb whispered, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder as we stood up from the wooden bench.
"Not home," I replied, adjusting my jacket. "We’re going to Coronado."
