Chapter 5 - The Federal Net

The boots of federal agents and local police echoed through the warehouse as they swarmed the area, subduing Colin and slapping steel cuffs onto Vanessa’s wrists. She screamed and thrashed as two officers hauled her to her feet, her pristine facade completely obliterated.
"Ethan Reynolds?" A tall man in a crisp federal investigator's suit stepped forward, flashing a badge. "I’m Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Division. Caleb Price briefed us and transmitted the digital archive. You and your daughter are safe now."
I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for ten months. "Is the evidence sufficient?"
Agent Miller gestured toward Colin, who was being dragged toward a waiting cruiser, still groaning from the taser shock. "Between the financial wire transfers, the cloud backups of the poisoning, and the testimonies from the other three victimized families we've linked them to, they’re looking at twenty years minimum for wire fraud, conspiracy, and child endangerment. Colin’s disbarred status is the least of his problems."
I turned and walked back to the secure corridor. When I opened the blast door, Nora was sitting on the edge of the cot, watching the flashing lights through the tiny observation window.
"Is the bad lady gone, Daddy?" she asked softly, her eyes wide.
I scooped her up into my arms, burying my face in her hair, feeling the overwhelming weight of the past year finally lift from my shoulders. "She’s gone, sweetie. She’s never coming back."

We walked out of the warehouse together into the cool San Diego night air. The city lights stretched out before us, brilliant and eternal. The ghost of Grace no longer felt like a lost memory, but a guardian angel who had guided our hands through the dark.
For the first time in years, the future felt entirely our own.
