Chapter 12 - The Fallout and the Ghost House

By dawn, the federal building looked like a war zone. Media vans clogged the streets outside, broadcasting breaking news reports about a massive internal corruption scandal involving federal agents, disbarred attorneys, and a complex multi-million-dollar inheritance fraud syndicate.

Nora and I sat in a private debriefing room on the upper floor, drinking hot chocolate while a pediatric trauma specialist gently checked her over. She was quiet, but the violent shaking in her hands had finally stopped. The poison was out of her system. The nightmare was, for the moment, legally neutralized.

Caleb walked into the room, tossing a heavy leather briefcase onto the metal table. "Agent Miller is singing like a canary. Turns out Grace’s 'accidental death' years ago was financed by a shell corporation tied to an international asset-stripping ring operating out of the Cayman Islands. Colin was just their local legal cleaner. Grace was their chief architect."

"And Vanessa?" I asked, looking down at my daughter, who was leaning her head against my shoulder, half-asleep.

"Vanessa’s trial is going to be expanded to include federal racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder. She’s looking at life without parole now," Caleb said grimly, pulling out a thick manila folder. "Which brings us to the final piece of the puzzle. The Coronado beach house. Under the emergency asset-forfeiture rulings, the court has completely restored Grace’s original pre-nuptial estate trust directly to Nora, with you as sole executor. Free and clear. No strings attached."

I stared at the folder. Seven million dollars in oceanfront property. The very thing they tried to kill my daughter to steal.

"We're not keeping it," I said quietly.

Caleb paused, raising an eyebrow. "You’re giving it up?"

"We're selling every square inch of it," I replied, looking down at Nora’s peaceful face. "And every cent is going into a secure, blind educational trust where no corporate lawyer, no corrupt judge, and no ghost from the past can ever touch it. We are moving out of California."
