Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

The heavy metallic groan of the reversing industrial fans echoed through the steel walls of the safehouse. Outside in the main warehouse, the muffled sound of coughing and violent hacking pierced the intercom speakers.
"What the hell is happening?" Colin’s voice roared, strained and choked by his own chemical weapon. "Vanessa, you said the air would be clear!"
"Shut up and use the crowbar!" Vanessa screamed back, her polished composure completely shattered.
Through the infrared camera feed, we watched the couple scramble in panic as the dense, irritating white fog billowed around them. Colin swung his heavy iron crowbar frantically against the reinforced steel door of our panic room, leaving deep dents in the metal, but the heavy-duty hydraulic bolts held firm.
"They're not getting through this door without C4," Caleb muttered, tracking their movements on the dual monitors. "And they don't have time for explosives. My local unit is ten minutes out."
"Ten minutes is too long," I said, reaching into Caleb’s tactical gear locker and pulling out a heavy-duty riot shield and a taser-pistol. "They came here to destroy my family and steal everything Grace left behind. I’m not waiting for permission to finish this."
Caleb didn't try to stop me. He simply handed me a secure encrypted flash drive. "If you make it to the main terminal outside, plug this into their master laptop. It will instantly download every financial transfer, text message, and offshore account they share into the federal database. It's the kill switch."
I tucked the drive into my pocket, gripped the taser-pistol, and looked down at Nora. "Stay right here with Caleb, sweetheart. Daddy has to go fix things."
"Be careful, Daddy," she whispered, her small hand reaching out to touch my cheek.
I spun the heavy locking wheel of the blast door. The steel slab swung outward with a pneumatic hiss. The air in the hallway was thick with residual chemical haze, stinging my eyes and burning my throat, but I forced my way forward into the main warehouse.
Vanessa was on her knees near the front desk, coughing violently, her mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks. Colin was staggering toward the exit, dragging his leather briefcase, desperate to save himself.
"Leaving so soon, Colin?" I shouted, stepping out from the shadows of the corridor.
Colin whirled around, panic twisting his face. He reached inside his jacket, his hand flashing toward a concealed firearm.
I didn't hesitate. I raised the taser-pistol and pulled the trigger.
Two barbed darts slammed straight into his chest with a sharp crack. Fifty thousand volts of electricity surged through his nervous system. Colin let out a raw, inhuman shriek, his eyes rolling back before he collapsed hard onto the concrete floor, twitching violently into unconsciousness.
Vanessa scrambled backward, her manicured hands scraping against the floor, her face pale with absolute horror. "Ethan... please. We can talk about this. It was all Colin's idea. He manipulated me!"
I walked slowly toward her, the sound of my boots echoing off the concrete. The monster I had trusted with my life, my home, and my daughter looked so painfully small.
May you like
"You didn't just manipulate me, Vanessa," I said, standing over her as she trembled against the desk. "You poisoned my little girl."
Before she could speak, the front doors of the warehouse blew open, and a flood of red-and-blue emergency lights painted the room.
