Chapter 3 - The Siege

"Get to the panic room in the back corridor, now!" Caleb barked, shoving me toward the hallway as a heavy thud echoed against the warehouse's steel-reinforced rear entrance.

I scooped Nora up into my arms. She woke up gasping, her eyes wide with primal terror. "Daddy? What's happening?"

"Hold onto my neck, baby. Don't let go," I whispered fiercely, sprinting down the narrow corridor as a hissing sound began to fill the outer rooms.

"They’re using CS gas," Caleb shouted over the roaring alarm, slamming a thick steel blast door shut behind us and spinning a heavy mechanical wheel to lock it into place. The room was small, lit by emergency red LED strips, and lined with computer terminals, communications gear, and racks of tactical equipment. "They tracked your phone’s emergency backup ping. They knew you’d come here because this is my primary operational base."

"How did they find us so fast?" I demanded, setting Nora down on a cot and wrapping a damp cloth around her face.

"It wasn't your phone. It was the cloud sync on the baby monitor in your house," Caleb cursed, his hands flying across the console to access the interior cameras. "Vanessa had administrator privileges. She’s been tracking your IP address for hours."

On the monitor, we watched Vanessa stride through the smoke-filled warehouse like she owned the world. Behind her walked Colin Vance—tall, sharp-featured, with an expensive suit completely out of place in a tactical safehouse. He was holding a heavy-duty bolt cutter and a black leather briefcase.

"Ethan! I know you're in there!" Vanessa’s voice echoed through the intercom speakers, chillingly calm and devoid of any maternal warmth. "You’re only making this harder on Nora. Open the door, sign the Coronado transfer papers, and I’ll let you keep custody of the brat. Otherwise, Colin has a federal warrant right here claiming you kidnapped my stepdaughter and are hoarding illegal firearms. The SWAT team is five minutes away."

"She's lying," Caleb whispered, tapping a sequence into his console. "There’s no SWAT team. They're trying to force you out before my local contacts can intercept them."

I looked at Nora. She was trembling, burying her face in my chest, whispering, “Don't let her take me, Daddy. Please don't let her take me.”

Something inside me snapped. The grief I had carried for years for Grace, the betrayal I felt from Vanessa, the terror inflicted on my innocent child—it all crystallized into a lethal focus.

"Caleb," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "Give me the tactical override for the exterior gas vent."

Caleb looked at me, saw the look in my eyes, and a grim smile touched his lips. "It’s tied to the main HVAC intake. If I reverse the fans, everything they pumped in is going right back into their faces."

"Do it."
