Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a PhantomThe screen of my encrypted phone glowed against the dark marble of the pantry, casting a cold blue hue over June’s terrified face. The name at the bottom of the electronic payment voucher wasn’t a low-level clerk’s. It belonged to Marcus Vance—my chief operating officer, my shadow, the man who had managed my corporate portfolio and personal life for over a decade.

For six years, Blackwell Domestic Services had billed my corporate account for a top-tier salary of $6,500 a month for June’s labor. But the subsidiary processing account—an internal shell ledger managed directly by Marcus’s private finance team—was only forwarding $2,200 to her personal bank account. The remaining $4,300 vanished into a digital labyrinth every single Friday, swallowed by an offshore routing number tied to a holding company I didn’t recognize.

"Mr. Blackwell?" June whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched the cracked plate of cold rice to her chest. "Did I... did I do something wrong with the taxes? Is the agency taking it back for withholding?"

"No, June," I said, my voice dropping into the quiet, flat register that usually made seasoned politicians and rival developers sweat in boardrooms. "You didn't do anything wrong. But someone is going to pay for every single meal you missed."

I looked down at her bruised knuckles—hands that scrubbed my floors while a corporate parasite skimmed the wages meant to feed her children in Peoria. The anger didn't flare like a match; it solidified like molten iron in my chest. Marcus hadn't just stolen money from my ledger. He had weaponized my own name to starve a mother under my roof.

"Pack your things from the staff quarters tonight," I told her, helping her up by the elbow with a gentleness that startled her. "Tomorrow, you aren't cleaning. You're sitting in the executive boardroom at Blackwell Tower. And we are going to tear my empire apart to see who else is bleeding with us."
