Chapter 16 - Shadows of the Past

That night, alone in the mansion, I walked past my late wife’s study. The door, usually locked tight like a mausoleum, stood slightly ajar. Inside, I found June dusting the mahogany bookshelves under the soft amber glow of a reading lamp. She had taken it upon herself to catalog Sarah’s old design journals. Instead of feeling a sharp pang of grief, a strange sense of peace settled over me. The house was finally breathing again, no longer haunted by ghosts, but inhabited by people who cared for its walls.
