Chapter 10 - The Last MidnightIt was midnight. Exactly six months to the day since I had found June eating cold rice on the stone floor of my pantry.

I walked down the grand mahogany staircase into the kitchen, wearing a simple black sweater. The house was dead silent, save for the low hum of the refrigerator.

I opened the pantry door. The strip of hallway light cut across the clean stone floor.

There was no cracked plate. No gray uniform. No hidden hunger.

Instead, sitting on the marble kitchen island upstairs, a fresh note written in neat, elegant handwriting awaited me: “The fridge is fully stocked, Mr. Blackwell. And yes, I checked the inventory twice.”

I smiled to myself, turning off the hallway light, and for the first time in a very long time, I walked back upstairs to sleep through the entire night.
