Chapter 4 - Sub-Level ThreeThe holding room smelled of damp concrete and stale ozone. There were no windows, no clocks, and no way out except through a biometric steel door reinforced with titanium alloy. They had stripped me of my phone, my watch, and my suit jacket, leaving me in a pristine white dress shirt under the harsh glare of a flickering fluorescent strip.

For two hours, I sat on the edge of the minimalist steel cot, letting the reality of my own arrogance wash over me.

I had isolated myself. When my wife died, I built an emotional fortress, and Marcus had simply locked the gates from the outside. He had systematically replaced my inner circle, redirected auditing oversight, and turned my corporate machinery into a silent coup.

At 10:00 AM, the heavy pneumatic hiss of the door broke the silence.

It wasn't a guard. It was June.

She slipped through the closing gap of the door, holding a heavy wrench she must have pulled from a maintenance cart in the hallway. Her face was pale, but her jaw was set with a quiet, fierce determination that completely erased the broken woman I had found eating cold rice on my kitchen floor.

"June?" I stood up in disbelief. "How did you get down here? The guards—"

"Your guards are currently locked in the security monitoring room," she said, tossing the heavy wrench onto the cot with a metallic clatter. "My mother spent twelve years working maintenance and union organizing in industrial plants before her lungs gave out, Mr. Blackwell. She taught me how to bypass biometric override relays using a standard copper grounding wire from an elevator shaft."

I stared at her, the pieces clicking together in a sudden, blinding flash of clarity. "You weren't just a housekeeper placed by an agency, were you?"

"My name is June Carter-Vance," she said quietly, pulling a small, encrypted flash drive from the lining of her worn wool coat. "Marcus Vance's estranged niece. And the only person he forgot to scrub from the internal corporate compliance registry before he staged his boardroom takeover."
